Disc Golf Journey of Bruce

Disc Golf Journey of Bruce This is my journey, transcribed, of how I learned Disc Golf, one painfully ignorant step at a time.

Here, I (or we) share my (our) Disc Golf learning discoveries in the hope of helping one other person in their journey of DG improvement!

It's been a hot minute or so since I've started this journey. I'm stuck at ~225 feet, on average, despite having hired a coach or two. So for now, it's 225', unless I've got a tailwind and throwing downhill... but I can't count that... There's something I'm just not hitting on... yet. Ug.

Even though I think I got this (the x-step part) it never hurts to keep on top of any instruction that you might catch that you weren't aware of... with that in mind...

Jaani presents great info in terse bits, getting right to the chase of the matter. ( 'The stride!!!' )

Don't be careful, be sure.
Just execute.

The other day, someone made the silliest and yet most impactful statement about my game that has helped me pop into and out of the power-pocket: Pull/curl it into your bicep. Damn.

This instructor gets right to the point with very little fluff:

With over 22 years of experience in Disc Golf, coach DG SpinDoctor teaches you simple but effective ways to throw frisbees far, hard and accurately.

For those still developing their game, here's an interesting observation....

When I practice to throw far, I try to throw hard. It goes far... for me.
But then I back off on any real power, and focus on executing the release instead, it goes as far or sometimes farther.

Food for thought.... that is all.

I've noticed while trying to work on my aiming that while I try to use a mark on the ground 10 feet away from me, that leading with my elbow (as if I'm going to smack someone) and being mindful of where my elbow starts traveling towards, seems to help my aiming immensely. More to follow as I work on it.

Remember, UPWIND, DISC DOWN.
DOWNWIND, DISC UP.

After about a year of struggling with how to get better, I've hit on an interesting perspective... no matter how much you try to sort out your arm executions, leg work, bracing, etc., etc., if you DO NOT have good disc snap/spin release, it's all for naught and a WASTE of time.

So I'm saying, sure, dabble in all the other stuff, but GET THAT RELEASE down so it snaps/spins out of your hand. Spin/rotation speed/revs is what makes your disc go farther. Once you get that down, then working on all the other stuff is warranted.

The balance of what I focus on when training: '3, 2 and 1 parts' focus. I break down my practice/training time like this:

1 hour distance driving
2 hours upshot/parking
3 hours putting.

I don't have a ton of distance right now, so I'll work a little bit on that with new premises or ideas.

Since I don't have a ton of distance, I have started figuring out how to throw a good park job.

Since I'm parking, I need to make sure I don't give any points away, so it's time to really focus on putting and making that work, more than anything else.

More human-like time frames might actually look like this:

20 minutes driving,
40 minutes upshot,
60 minutes putting.
