I have been tired lately, the season has changed(we are in ‘may grey’ here in SB), my work schedule is fully booked, life is fun and vibrant, but busy. Getting on the mat has felt a lil harder, but I am at the point where it feels stranger not to practice, so I always show up and just see what happens. How did I get to this point?
When we see Yoga as merely one thing, and that is usually a physical practice, it can feel challenging to show up when we feel tired or busy. We might have an expectation of what we should do, and if we don’t feel capable then we don’t even want to try.
But what if we came to your practice through a different lense? Understanding Yoga philosophy can help.
One of my favourite Yoga sutras is 1:14
स तु दीर्घकालनैरन्तर्यसत्कारआदरसवितो दृढभूमिः
“Sa tu dirgha-kala-nairantarya-satkara-sevito dridha-bhumih” it translates as “When practice is sustained for an extended period of time, without interruption, and with dedication, it becomes firmly grounded.” – Swami Satchidananda
There is no mention of āsana, postures. Just showing up, consistently and with dedication. Changing your mindset can change how it feels to show up. Practice is an exploration, not only of the body but of the self.
Life will inevitably present challenges and distractions, but when our practice is firmly established over time these are less likely to derail us. We just keep showing up. Transformation unfolds slowly, gently shaping our thoughts, emotions, ideas and daily life.
