Hi. I'm Stephen. I'm a human being.

Unlike some AI-generated tai chi "masters" popping up all over social media.

If you want to learn authentic, traditional, Yang style tai chi ch'uan, sign up for a class with a real, live, human teacher with actual experience. Don't trust apps or bots with an art like tai chi—a traditional martial art that's popular as a health exercise due to its proven health benefits, backed by studies.

Tai chi involves your whole self. Your mind, body, and spirit—none of which any AI "teacher" has ever known.

I'm a certified tai chi ch'uan instructor with over a quarter century of experience. I trained hard for years under another my teacher, Sifu Harvey Kurland, who trained hard for years under his teacher, Grandmaster Tchoung Ta-tchen, who trained hard for years under his teacher, and so on, all the way back to Yang Luchan, the founder of Yang Style Tai Chi.

We offer in-person classes in Orange County, CA, and have a new Zoom option starting later this month. So if you're serious about learning authentic tai chi ch'uan or looking for a new way to improve your health in the new year, give us a try.

Students often ask why we exhale through the nose, never through the mouth, in Tai Chi. In this quick demo, I use a red rebreakable board from Golden Tiger Martial Arts Supplies (rated to be equivalent to a ¾-inch wood board) to illustrate the principle in action.

By exhaling through the nose, you keep your qi centered and focused within the body, allowing it to concentrate into the strike instead of leaking out through the mouth. The result isn’t about force or noise—it’s about directing energy with calm intent.

This is the essence of fajin: relaxed, then explosive, power generated through breath, structure, and focus—the synthesis of yi (intent), li (muscular force), and qi (energy).
