This month’s featured speaker is Captain Matt Mitchell. Operating out of St. James City on Pine Island, Captain Mitchell has been an active licensed fishing guide since 2000. He spends up to 300 days a year on the water and knows how to catch fish. His focus is on both inshore and nearshore angling. He recently purchased a twenty-six-foot Goldline center console boat that can accommodate up to six anglers comfortably. Matt typically targets the big three inshore species: spotted sea trout, redfish, and snook. He also writes a weekly fishing report in one of the local newspapers.

With spring fast approaching, Matt will also discuss the fourth, and most challenging, of the inshore fish, the silver king, or tarpon. Matt will talk about where and when to find them, what kind of gear he uses and, most importantly, what baits he prefers to get them to bite. Any angler wanting to learn more about how and where to catch tarpon should plan on attending this exciting presentation.

This coming Tuesday evening, January 13th, 2026, the Sanibel Island Fishing Club will be holding its first official meeting of the 2026 season. The meeting will be held in the north room of the Sanibel Island Community House, which is located at 2173 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, FL. The meeting gets underway at 5:30 p.m. with a half hour social among our angling members. The presentation begins at 6:00 p.m. sharp. There is no admission charge for this event and the angling public is cordially invited to attend. Refreshments and pizza slices are available at a nominal charge.
This month’s featured speaker should be of interest to every inshore or near shore angler on Sanibel or Captiva. The guest speaker, Kali Spurgin, is a Regional Biologist with the Southwest Florida Division of Fisheries Mgt. with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. A graduate with Honors from FSU in Marine Biology, Kali has been with the FWC since 2016.
Kali, and her assistant, Andrea Murry, will be giving us an overview of the science behind the “holistic approach” to inshore fisheries management. In addition, they will be discussing the recently proposed changes to our local spotted sea trout fishery, which is one of the most targeted inshore species throughout Pine Island Sound. These changes include new slot limits, bag limits and the proposal to create 9 distinct management zones for seatrout instead of the current statewide regulations. This will allow FWC to better address the local nature of the sea trout populations.

This meeting’s featured speaker is offshore Captain Nick Weyers of “Most Excellent Fishing” Charters. Weyers Nick, prior to guiding locally for the past four years, has fished everywhere from Alaska to the Caribbean. Primarily focused on offshore species, Captain Nick and his clients have landed a host of offshore species, including American red snapper (which he specializes in), African pompano, red and gag grouper, mangrove snapper, and even an occasional wahoo. He will share his angling experiences, as well as his favorite baits and tackle, with the fishing club.
As always, there will be an extended question and answer period after his presentation. If you are an offshore angler or thinking about giving it a try, do not miss this exciting opportunity to learn what can happen offshore. To see Captain Nick’s extensive photo gallery of remarkable catches, go to www,mostexcellentfishing.com. The shot featured in this article is that of a massive wahoo taken in the Gulf on one of his 80-mile trips. He fishes on a twin-engine, 29’ offshore open SeaVee.
