Help us care for the Field of Heroes.

We've placed a container at the middle entrance to the park, right off of the bike path. If you see that a tag has come off, you can either leave it in the container, or use one of the enclosed zip ties to reattach it to the flag it became seperated from.

The City of Sanibel and Sanibel Recreation Center extend our sincere thanks to the Basilone Memorial Foundation for its generous $1,000 donation to the Field of Heroes. Their support helps us honor the 2,977 lives lost on September 11, 2001, while continuing a shared commitment to remembering those who have served and sacrificed for our country.

The Basilone Memorial Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, a World War II hero and recipient of both the Medal of Honor and Navy Cross. Raised in Raritan, New Jersey, Basilone became known for his extraordinary courage at Guadalcanal and later gave his life during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.

Today, the Foundation keeps his spirit of service alive by supporting military veterans and their families, as well as individuals and families impacted by cancer.

We are incredibly grateful to the Basilone Memorial Foundation for standing with us as we remember, reflect and ensure that the stories of America’s heroes are never forgotten. Thank you for helping make Sanibel’s Field of Heroes possible. Basilone Memorial Foundation

The Field of Heroes is complete!

Thanks to an incredible group of volunteers, all 2,977 flags have now been placed in honor and remembrance of the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who gave their time, energy, and care to help bring this meaningful tribute to life.

We invite the community to visit the Field of Heroes at Sanibel Community Park. The field is open daily from sunup to sundown through September 15.

Come walk the field, read the names and take a moment to remember and reflect.
