Bio-Security Update for All Boarders & Lesson Students
There was an EHV-1 outbreak at a major barrel race in Texas last month. A Paint show used the same facility right after, and now multiple AQHA World horses could have been exposed. Many of those horses traveled from out of state, including Florida.
There are currently no confirmed cases in Florida, but it is very likely we will see some soon.
Effective immediately:
• No horses may leave the property and return
• No new horses may come onto the property
• Wash hands often and limit horse-to-horse contact
• Avoid visiting other farms. If you do, disinfect shoes, wash hands, and change clothes before coming here
This is not to cause panic—just to protect our herd.
Vaccines:
Please check that your horse is UTD on vaccines.
If it has been more than 6 months since their last EHV/Rhino booster, please revaccinate. The vaccine won’t prevent infection but will reduce severity and help limit spread.
About EHV-1:
EHV-1 spreads easily through direct contact, shared equipment, contaminated hands/clothing, and even droplets in barns or show environments.
It causes fever, respiratory signs, lethargy, and in some cases neurologic disease (EHM).
The neurologic form has already killed over 30 horses in this outbreak, which is why we are taking this very seriously.
Thank you for helping protect our horses and our barn community.
