Snow Creek Whitewater

Snow Creek Whitewater Snow Creek boating from Sheppard Mill to the confluence with the Dan River :: the Green Narrows of Stokes County, NC! Experience is the critical factor.

Early spring, 2011, a few local Stokes County river boaters asked the owner of Sheppard Mill if he would work with them so that they could see what it was like to float Snow Creek with the benefit of a mill pond "flush". You see, an instream mill pond such as the one at Sheppard Mill, must be flushed regularly to prevent sediment build-up. Draining the mill pond at Sheppard Mill down to it's origi

nal creek bed takes about 3 hours with the mud gate open 100%. During that time the creek rises about a foot and becomes a class II wilderness whitewater creek. Swift water, narrow channel and strainers make this a unique adventure run for the experienced whitewater boater. Which is not to say that recreational kayaks are inappropriate here - they are fine with the exception of one class III+ rapid with a developed portage. This page is intended to provide the technical information regarding the creek, safety, and pond flush releases provided by Sheppard Mill.

This Sunday, July 20, we're inviting whitewater boaters to once again Float the Flush on Snow Creek from Sheppard Mill down to the Dan River.

Set shuttle at the Snow Creek Access on Pitzer Rd. (the 'take-out' for the Snow Creek run) and then travel to the put-in at Sheppard Mill. Park behind the Mill Store Residence (Dale's place).

The gate at Sheppard Mill will open at 12pm. Water will begin flowing at 1pm. The creek should be ready to ride between 1:30 & 2:00pm.

While there is a strainer cleaning effort ongoing please be aware that Snow Creek will likely still contain lots of hazards in the form of woody debris - not a place for beginners. Feel free to come early, warm up on the MillPond and tour the Mill. A donation jar will be located at the Mill - visitors who appreciate the preservation efforts at this historic site as well as the whitewater it provides are encouraged to contribute whatever they feel is appropriate.

Snow Creek is a true wilderness paddling experience. Class I/II whitewater with flush-assisted flow of about 90-100cfs. At the mid-point along the 4.5 mile section is the Class III+ Flint Mill Hole Rapid which is easily portaged. Those choosing to run the big drop are advised to wear appropriate protection since the water likes to slap boaters heads into the rock wall at the bottom. It has been a few weeks since the last flush so it's possible that the water will be more 'murky' than it was late last Fall when it was being flushed weekly.

Strainer work scheduled for Friday morning, July 18.

And then - if there's enough water ... Float the Flush on Sunday, July 20. Will be watching the forecast precipitation.

Who's looking forward to a fun little float down Snow Creek when it warms up?
WARNING: There are currently 2 creek-wide strainers on Snow Creek that require portage. The first is upstream of the Flint Mill Hole and the second below it.

This Sunday's weather is looking mighty fine! Sheppard Mill will be flushing around Noon. Anyone up for some sweet whitewater on Snow Creek?
Of course, with all the water we've got in these parts most of the local whitewater sections will be rolling too - Joyce Mill and Jessup Mill sections of the Dan, Big Creek, North Fork of the Mayo. Many options.
If you have a group of paddlers who'd like to paddle Snow Creek a little later than 1pm please comment here or contact Dale at the Mill - 336.793.4440

Taking a run at the Flint Mill Hole.

We in the Upper Dan River of Stokes and Patrick Counties pledge to continue sending clean water to our neighbors downstream until the is cleaned up and life returns to the mighty Dan of the Piedmont. And then we'll all pledge together to care for our entire watershed - forever.

Our intimate mountain stream between Walnut Cove North Carolina and its headwaters in Meadows of Dan, Virginia is not directly affected by the current disaster near Eden, NC. Thankfully, Coal Ash waste does not flow upstream.

Our hearts and full support go out to the effected communities east of Eden in North Carolina and Virginia.

The flush schedule Sheppard Mill has been a little erratic lately with all of the freezing conditions. The February 2 Flush will probably not get started until 3pm. Hope everyone has exactly the SuperbOwl Sunday they're wanting ;-)

01/05/2014

Millpond will be flushed tomorrow around noon for water on the creek if 2 or more boaters are interested!

Paddling with friends who know what they're doing is the most important safety feature of any river trip.

A kayak rescue video early last November shows U.K kayaker Barny Young paddling with a few friends when one of his mates misses a line and pins bow first between two rocks.
