Mel Colchamiro's Rule of 23, in two parts:

In later rounds, no 2NT unless your side has 23+ HCP.

When your side has 23 and the opponents have the bid, pass is NOT an option. Double or bid on.

"PULL TRUMP ONLY WHEN YOU HAVE WINNERS OUTSIDE."

The rule that fixes a hundred broken contracts: "The only time you want to pull trump is because you have winners on the outside. You had losers everywhere — you wanted to be cross-ruffing."

If your side suits are full of losers, pulling trumps just strands you. Ruff back and forth, use your trumps as a work crew, and let the opponents' trumps get used up on YOUR terms.

Cross-ruff vs. pull trump — do you know which hand you're holding? This one decides contracts.

We play with little kids all the time, and I teach adults. You can spot the difference in one move.

A kid's partner wins the trick with the king, and the kid plays the ace on top of it anyway. They want to win.

Adults learn the bridge way: you're a partnership. If your partner is already winning, play your lowest card and keep your high cards for later.

They open. You're 5-5. You overcall one suit... and never get to show the other.

Michaels = bid THEIR suit.

• Over a minor: both majors
• Over a major: the other major + a minor (partner bids 2NT to ask which)

Unusual 2NT = the two LOWEST unbid suits.

• Over 1♦: clubs + hearts
• Over 1♥ or 1♠: both minors

Both promise 5-5. Not 5-4. Don't shave a card off the promise.

Who says competition has to happen on a field or court?

Just like any competitive activity, it's about doing what you love, challenging yourself, and having fun along the way.

Partner just asked about ONE suit. Forget your point count and look there.

Three or four small cards in that suit? Say no, every time. A void, a singleton, a doubleton, or an ace? Say yes.

My exact words in class: "If you have shortness or a doubleton, you say yes. And if you have three or four small, you say no." That's the whole decision, no math involved.
