Pronunciation: /ɑːr eɪtʃ oʊ/ (noun)

Usage: “I was ready to open 1 Spade, but my RHO opened 3 Hearts and ruined everything.”

It is the opponent who gets to act just before you do.

In Bridge, **RHO** stands for **Right-Hand Opponent**, the player sitting immediately to your right. Because bidding and play move clockwise, RHO takes their turn directly before yours.

During the auction, that can make RHO particularly troublesome. A well-timed preempt or competitive bid can consume valuable bidding space before you have the chance to describe your hand.

During the play, however, RHO's position can sometimes work in your favor. Since they play before you, you may get useful information from the card they choose before deciding what to play yourself.

Position matters on every deal.

Sometimes the player sitting one seat away can completely change your plan before you even get your turn.

The auction starts 1:diamonds:, 1:hearts:, 1:spades:. Now responder has 11 HCP and 5:hearts:.

In the agreement shown here, 1NT is too weak and 2:clubs: would be Fourth Suit Forcing to game. That makes 2NT the best available description of both the strength and shape of this hand.

Your exact answer can depend on your system and the hand's balance, so make sure you and your partner agree on what 2:clubs: and 2NT promise.

Good declarer play begins before you touch a card.

Once dummy comes down, scan both hands suit by suit. Count the sure tricks, identify the potential tricks, protect your entries and find the suit the defenders may attack first.

Then compare your possible lines:

How many things must go right?
What happens if the suit breaks badly?
Can you recover if the finesse loses?
Is there a safer way to make the contract?

With five cards missing, a 3-2 split happens about 68% of the time. A simple finesse is usually about 50%. The strongest line is often the one that depends on fewer favorable assumptions.

Sometimes that means making a safety play and giving up the chance for an overtrick to improve your odds of making the contract. At IMPs, protecting the contract is usually the priority. At matchpoints, the value of an overtrick may change the calculation.

Do not just count your tricks. Predict how the play is likely to unfold.

Just over a hundred years ago, in 1925, Harold S. Vanderbilt worked out the scoring changes aboard the SS Finland that turned auction bridge into contract bridge, the game we play today.

Contract bridge went on to replace auction bridge in popularity. One idea, one scoring system, an entirely new game.
