Blackfriar's School of Fence Blackfriar’s School of Fence is the premier HEMA club on the California Central Coast. Blackfriar's School of Fence pursues the study of European martial arts.

This is accomplished through referencing historical fight manuals from the years 1400 to 1800. These manuals provide an insight to fighting methods of the time that is more accurate than what is depicted in film or television. The school’s current focus is medieval knightly arts of the Italian and German Masters. This encompasses long sword, dagger, and unarmed fighting techniques. We first start

students with the basics of history, safety, and footwork. Next, sword anatomy, movement, offence, and defense. Classes are a mixture of introduction, application, and engagement. Each class is a building block and there will be ample time to practice and explore each move. Integrated into each session will be a bit of history, physics, and biomechanics as well as tactics and some humor. Just like any other martial art, commitment yields the greatest success. This study fosters elements of character development such as strength, respect, courage, and good sportsmanship.

Heads up to the sword enthusiasts of the San Luis Obispo region! Blackfriar’s School of Fence is once again offering HEMA classes at Cuesta College this spring. We offer three levels of longsword: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. More information can be found on the Cuesta website. Hope to see you there!
