𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸’𝘀 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀—𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗶𝘁.

For our 3- to 5-year-olds, that meant learning about boundaries, speaking up for themselves, and self-respect.

Those are big ideas for little kids, so we introduce them through play, movement, positivity, and repetition. The goal is not just to understand something in class, but to begin using it at home, at school, and in everyday life.

That’s also why caregiver participation matters so much in Excellent Kids. When parents know what we’re working on, they can help keep the same language and skills going outside the academy.

Each week brings a new Life Skill, and each one gives us another way to help our youngest students build a stronger foundation for martial arts—and for life.

Did you know that our Jidokwan began as Shotokan karate? Thank you Funakoshi Sensei. 🙇🏻‍♀️

Gichin Funakoshi is the father of modern karate.

Born in 1868 in Shuri, Okinawa, he was a small, sickly child who found strength through karate training under the two greatest masters of his time, Yasutsune Azato and Yasutsune Itosu. As a schoolteacher, he lived by humility and discipline, not violence. In 1922, he was invited to Tokyo to demonstrate Okinawan karate at a Ministry of Education exhibition — he never left. With almost no money, sleeping in a dormitory and cleaning for students, he introduced karate to mainland Japan, transforming a secret Okinawan self-defense art into a Japanese martial way. He founded Shotokan, named after his pen name Shoto meaning "waving pines," and taught at universities like Keio and Takushoku, where his students would become legends. He changed the characters of karate from "China hand" to "empty hand," added the Do — the way of life — and created the 20 principles, including his most famous: "Karate ni sente nashi — there is no first attack in karate." Until his death in 1957 at age 88, he never sought fame or rank; he sought character. He didn't just teach people how to fight — he taught them how to become better human beings, and that is why all styles still bow to him today.

𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗡𝗮𝗲.

After every class, students are given a rag and help wipe down the mats.

For the younger ones, it can be a playful and social. As students get older and move up in rank, the expectation changes. What starts as a fun way to help becomes a real responsibility to take care of the space where they train.

These are our Japanese roots. In Japan, students traditionally help clean their own classrooms and shared school spaces as part of the school day. The idea is simple: if you use a space, you help care for it.

We carry that traditional life skills into InNae. Students train here together, and they help take care of it together.

While the students wipe the mats with diluted white vinegar after every class, staff uses hospital grade disinfection after classes conclude.

𝐋𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐫 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐬𝐞𝐞𝐦𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐤 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬.

Yesterday I introduced our 𝗞𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 to a drill I call “sandwiches.”

They were practicing horse stance twin punches—punching into the pad in front, then retracting both elbows to strike the pad behind them.

It was new, and it took teamwork. Students had to focus on the movement, caregivers helped hold pads, and everyone worked together through the awkward first tries and the gradual improvements that followed.

That’s the part I like most. Learning here is rarely one person doing something alone. It’s effort, cooperation, correction, encouragement, and trying again until the movement starts to make sense.

I love this moment when Gabriel acting as class Teaching Assistant readily helped Violet and her mom learn to tie her belt. It's especially meaningful because Gabriel began at InNae as a tiny student and now he's able to help others. 💙

We teach martial arts, but part of what I hope students learn here is how to look out for one another and how to be part of a community where people matter.

Those moments may not be the flashy ones, but they say a lot about who we are.

Before Taekwondo became one unified art, Korea’s martial arts were taught through separate schools called 𝑘𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑠. Jidokwan—“Way of Wisdom School”—was one of the foundational schools that helped shape what Taekwondo became.

Jidokwan was especially known for 𝑘𝑦𝑜𝑟𝑢𝑔𝑖—sparring. At InNae, we continue that heritage through old-school Jidokwan sparring, not the limited sparring of modern sport Taekwondo. Our students learn to defend against punches to the face and kicks directed anywhere on the body—because practical self-defense does not come with tournament rules.

On Taekwondo Day, we honor both the art and the Jidokwan roots that continue to shape how we train.

Ian is celebrating 6 months, Kysaac 1 year, and Violet 2 years.

It’s always special to award anniversary certificates, but what I really notice is how much each student has grown since they started. Each of them has grown in confidence, and not in exactly the same way.

And Violet… wow. She now uses a strong Voice Defense, calls the class to bow in, and leads warm-ups with confidence. Watching that unfold over the last two years has been pretty amazing.

That’s what anniversaries give us a chance to notice—not just how long someone has been here, but how much they’ve grown during that time.

Congratulations, Ian, Kysaac, and Violet. I’m very proud of each of you. 💙
