Passing the closed guard with professor Romulo Melo.
Classes with Coach Evandro and Romulo this week have all been about this problem: you’re inside someone’s closed guard, and nothing good happens until you get out.
The pass, step by step. Hands on the hip and the neck (legal, you just can’t squeeze). Step one leg out and cut an angle. Establish the knee and elbow connection. Stand up in a low crouch, using your back leg to lift his leg. Push the rear knee down, slide your ankle behind it, and drop your knee to staple the leg to the mat. Connect your other elbow to your knee so he can’t push you off, control the head, backstep, and establish side control.
Why this matters beyond BJJ: on the ground with someone’s legs wrapped around you, you you can’t leave and your striking is compromised. Passing guard is how you get from stuck to in control, whether the goal is side control or getting back to your feet.
Our BJJ program is built in partnership with Romulo Melo BJJ. Fundamentals Wednesdays at 6pm with Coach Evandro. Open Mat Grappling Saturdays at 8am. Both included in your Forge membership at no additional cost.

We just replaced every jump rope at with fifteen new Rogue Fitness Thai-Style Jump Ropes, and they’re excellent.
Thick, heavy 9’ and 10’ ropes that work your arms and shoulders while you jump. Bearing-mounted handles that spin smooth and don’t tangle mid-round. No-slip grips sized right for adult hands. Every coach and student who picked one up came back with the same review: these are great.
Why do jump ropes matter at a self-defense gym? We tell our students you need three things to survive a fight: some degree of fitness, the mental commitment to go home safe no matter what it takes, and some skill. Jump rope builds the first one directly. It’s a staple in our boxing and Dutch Kickboxing classes because it develops the footwork and cardio that carry you through a real confrontation.
Good gear makes good training easier. Thanks Rogue Fitness for building things that hold up.

The hook sets up the low kick.
Watch Coach Xavier’s arm after the hook lands. It windshield-wipers back, which turns the hips and shoulders together and loads the kick before the foot ever moves. Reset the stance, feet come forward, left round kick or shuffle kick.
Dutch kickboxing is built on this kind of connective tissue. Every strike feeds the next.
Dutch Kickboxing at Forge. Tuesdays 6pm, Fridays 12pm, Saturdays 9am. Included in every Forge membership at no additional cost, alongside Krav Maga, boxing, BJJ, and Pekiti Tirsia Kali.

Panabas puntadas drill from the Pekiti University curriculum.
Panabas means slashing. Puntadas means thrusting. Pekiti Tirsia Kali is built on these two methods and the deflections that live between them, and this drill trains all three in one sequence.
Kali at Forge every Sunday at 11am. Forge is San Francisco’s only official Pekiti Tirsia Kali Tactical Association affiliate, and the program is included in every Forge membership at no additional cost.
All backgrounds, levels, ages, and genders welcome.

How to throw a groin kick.
Coach Kimberly breaks down the aiming mechanic from our Level 1 Krav Maga curriculum: wherever your knee points, your kick goes. Point the knee at the target, extend the foot. Groin, chest, knee. Same mechanic, different elevation. The rest is distance and range management.
The groin kick is one of the first techniques we teach at Forge because it works. Simple mechanics, high-value target, and a principle that carries into every other kick you’ll learn.
Intro Krav Maga classes run seven days a week in San Francisco. Two trial classes for $30.

Pekiti Tirsia Kali is the weapons layer at Forge. Edged and impact weapons, built on footwork, angles, and power generation that carry into our self-defense program.
Forge runs the only PTTA-certified Pekiti Tirsia Kali program in San Francisco, with training drawn directly from the Pekiti University curriculum. Like kickboxing and BJJ, our Kali class is included in every Forge membership at no extra cost.
Classes every Sunday at 11am. All levels, genders, and backgrounds welcome. No experience needed.

21 women. One Saturday. Real self-defense skills in San Francisco.
Coach Sydney ran our quarterly August Women’s Self-Defense Workshop and packed the room with fundamentals that hold up under pressure: how to strike with your whole body, how to break a grip on your wrist or your clothing, and how to fall without getting hurt.
No abstract theory. No fear-based lectures. Just a room full of women hitting pads, working with partners, and figuring out what they can actually do.
This is how self-defense training should feel. Serious about skill development, easy on the ego.
Women’s self-defense workshops in San Francisco run every quarter at Forge. Follow along for the next date.
Want to keep building now? We offer an introduction to Krav Maga class seven days a week at Forge. Two classes for $30. All levels, all ages, all backgrounds welcome.
