San Francisco Wing Chun

San Francisco Wing Chun We focus a lot on the basics. Proper body positions & a solid foundation will keep one relaxed under pressure that helps anticipate the opponents' attacks.

Wing Chun is a Chinese form of close-range combat. According to legend, Wing Chun was created by a woman in order to defeat a larger man. Wing Chun uses small, precise forces to deflect powerful attacks. Wing Chun works by using practical, efficient movements. OUR CLASS

Our style of Wing Chun emphasizes the skills that a smaller person needs to effectively defend against a larger, stronger person

. We don’t teach students how to be stronger or faster. Instead, we work to minimize muscular tension and aggression, which are counter-productive. We spend a lot of time on the basics. With the proper body positions and a solid foundation, we can stay relaxed under pressure, which helps us anticipate our opponents’ moves. Beginners are welcome to every class and no experience is needed. We all train together and there are no belts or separate grade classes. Advanced students regularly work out with beginning students in partner drills and free-form sparring. The class is relatively small and taught very casually, with the necessary information given freely, but learning this style requires practice and self-discipline. CLASS TIMES & LOCATION

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 pm to 10 pm on Taraval St. near 18th Ave. in San Francisco. Contact us to arrange a visit. Sundays from 10 am to 12 noon along the Fulton St. side of Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park. Feel free to just drop by the Sunday class. For more info, please email at [email protected].

Happy birthday to my father Sifu Ben Der!! He first learned Wing Chun in 1956 in Hong Kong with his high school classmates Hawkins Cheung and Bruce Lee. My father later became the student of Sifu Kenneth Chung and founded San Jose Wing Chun in 1972 and has been teaching there ever since! Throughout his 53 years of teaching, he emphasized the principles of Wing Chun with great detail and the importance of putting in the bitter work. He always treats his students with kindness, encouragement, and honesty. There are no favored students, no secret sets or hidden techniques. He taught everyone evenly. I aspire to follow in his footsteps! Happy birthday!!!

Remembering Harvey Quan. Harvey began his Wing Chun journey in 1973 with Sifu Eddie Chong and continued his training with San Francisco Wing Chun in 2016. He really loved the art of Wing Chun. Harvey was a warm and friendly “Uncle” to our younger students. He was tenacious, capable, clever, funny and always appreciative. Harvey was well-loved in my class by everyone. One of the students said, “He was a lovely, kind soul.” I totally agree with her and am very thankful for having known him over a brief nine years. Harvey peacefully passed away on January 13, 2025. He will truly be missed. RIP Harvey

I was honored to be at the Leung Sheung Wing Chun 2024 International Conference and Festival (梁相詠春2024年國際大會) with Sifu Ben Der, Sifu Kenneth Chung, Sifu Petrus Wai, and many other Wing Chun teachers and students! I had a great time meeting many wonderful people with the same passion for Wing Chun.

At this event, I was very honored to be recognized as a senior Wing Chun instructor in the Leung Sheung lineage Worldwide Leung Sheung Tong Wing Chun Confederation《世界梁相堂詠春同學總會》. I thank my father Sifu Ben Der, Sifu Kenneth Chung, Steve and Sandy Wong, and many other Wing Chun brothers and sisters at San Jose Wing Chun for their expert guidance over my four decades of training in the Leung Sheung lineage. Their detailed knowledge and experience have had a profound impact on me and my students at San Francisco Wing Chun.

While I am happy about the recognition, I am reminded of a Chinese saying that my father often uses when talking about Wing Chun: 學 無止境 (learning has no end). I hope to see everyone again soon!
