Underrated swim race tip for triathletes - swim in a straight line!

Adding extra distance to your swim burns unnecessary energy you will need for later on in your race and also can make the swim more mentally frustrating than it needs to be.

We recommend practicing sighting in the pool in addition to the open water to learn the art of integrating it into your stroke.

Life isn't a spreadsheet. Your training plan shouldn't be either.
But the alternative isn't an AI-generated program that guilt-trips you into making up missed sessions or prescribes hard intervals on a day your body is clearly asking for rest. The athletes who perform best aren't just fit, they're empowered. They understand their training, make smart decisions, and know when to push and when to pull back.

Tri Squad is built on that principle.

20+ years of proven methodology. Flexible, structured training that adapts to your life. Not the other way around. Real coach support from a team that knows you and your goals, not an algorithm guessing at them.

Inside Tri Squad you get fully integrated strength training, live and on-demand coached bike sessions with Matt Dixon and the Purple Patch team, and unlimited access to real coaches when you need them.

"If someone told me I had to train 20 hours a week to race an IRONMAN, I'd say this isn't the right project for me."
That's Stephanie — doctor, mom, IRONMAN World Championship qualifier. She did it without destroying her schedule, sleep, or sanity.

Kevin? 53-minute IRONMAN PR. Chris? A decade of injuries and burnout, then within one season, winning.

None of them out-volumed the competition. They out-smarted it. All three are Tri Squad athletes.

You can thrive on race day AND in your life outside of sport. That's the goal, and it's exactly what Tri Squad is built to deliver.

Not Your Father's IRONMAN training plan.

Most athletes think training for and nailing an IRONMAN means logging 15, 18, even 20-hour training weeks. Grinding through junk miles. Surviving the build.

That approach doesn't just wreck your schedule and life. It wrecks your race.

The athletes who show up fit AND fresh on race day? They didn't out-volume everyone else. They out-smarted them.

We have spent 20+ years coaching professional triathletes and busy age-groupers. 450+ pro podiums and wins. 1,500+ athletes qualified for World Championships. We know what works — and that methodology is the foundation of everything we do in Tri Squad.

The 80/20 rule. The "mini pro plan." Chasing more volume.
These are the three approaches that consistently fail busy IRONMAN athletes.

After 20+ years coaching professional triathletes and age-groupers, we can tell you, you don't race poorly because you didn't train hard enough. You race flat and fatigued because your training wasn't built to work with your life.

12 focused hours a week. Every intensity touched. Every session earning its place. That's what produces fit, fresh, fast athletes. And it's the methodology behind our Tri Squad program.

Huge Congratulations to Antonio on a fantastic performance at IRONMAN 70.3 Warsaw! 31st out of 109 in his age group.

He raced with intelligence, not ego. Antonio came into Warsaw managing a minor hamstring issue, he didn't ignore it but he didn't let it define his day. He built a smart race plan, controlled effort, took walk breaks at every aid station and executed to perfection. That kind of self-awareness and discipline is one of the key things that separates athletes who tap into their trained potential on race day and ones who don't.

Warsaw's bike course is deceptively demanding, flat, fast, and relentless for 90 kilometers with nowhere to hide. The long race-pace intervals Antonio put in during training prepared him precisely for that kind of constant pressure. That's the Purple Patch Half IRONMAN Race Build doing its job. A plan we continue to refine every single year, because in this sport, you either evolve or you die.

All said and done, he left with more than a result. Antonio is a Tri Squad athlete who showed up, adapted, and delivered on race day. Beyond the splits, he left Warsaw with real confidence in his fitness and momentum for the rest of his season.

Comment TRI below if you want to learn more about Tri Squad and how athletes like Antonio train smarter, race better, and still have a life.

No 50-mile weeks. No grinding through junk miles. No sacrificing everything else in your life.

Most marathon plans are built on one idea: run more. Log the miles. Stack the long runs. Trust the volume.
That's not the best way for most age group athletes to train. I know because I've coached hundreds of athletes to Boston qualifying times, sub-3 hours, and PRs they didn't think were possible. The common thread was never mileage. It was a smarter approach to training.

On June 18th I'm hosting a free live webinar: Fewer Miles, Faster Finish — Racing a Marathon on 35 Miles a Week.
A multisport approach. The right weekly split of running, biking, and lifting. Built to get you faster and keep you healthy.

You don't need more hours. You need to get more out of the hours you have.

If your IRONMAN training feels like a second job, it's not going to end well.

The reality is, 12 well-structured hours a week will outperform 18 chaotic ones almost every time. Not because volume doesn't matter. Because purposeless volume quietly destroys your fitness, your freshness, and your race day.
I've seen it hundreds of times. Athletes who train the most don't podium. Athletes who train the smartest do.

On June 11th I'm running a free live webinar — Faster, Fresher, and More Fun: Racing IRONMAN on 12 Hours a Week — and I'm going to show you exactly how to build that smarter week.
