At the Board of Directors meeting held on June 14th, the board voted on a motion to host USA Cycling sanctioned races at the velodrome. The motion did not pass.

The recorded vote was:

In favor: Roger Ainslie, Tyler Olmstead, Jeff DeGuide

Opposed: Bryan Williams, Eric Bodenchak, Erik Holtan

Not present: Nicole Alvaray

Because the motion did not receive a majority of the board, it failed.

The motion that was voted on read:

"That the Board of Directors approve hosting USA Cycling sanctioned races at the San Diego Velodrome on weekend dates, as a one year trial for the 2026 season, subject to the following conditions:

Weekend only. USAC races are held only on weekend days. Any previously scheduled USAC races on Tuesday Night Racing are moved to weekend dates, with specific dates set by the racing committee. Tuesday Night Racing and Friday Night Racing remain unlicensed, open, and unchanged.

Opt in. No member or racer is required to hold a USAC license or take part. A license is needed only to enter a USAC sanctioned event.

Inclusive structure. The Women+ field at USAC events is administratively registered as an Open category and run locally as inclusive Women+ racing, so that trans women can continue to compete, scored the same as any other field, with any upgrade points applying in the same way.

Board control of dates. Specific race dates are approved as a reserved use of the track and remain subject to board approval each season.

Annual review. The program is reviewed at the end of the season on its own merits, including participation, safety, whether these conditions held, and a member verified survey."

What this means: the board will not consider USAC-sanctioned racing for the remainder of this year. Future boards may choose to consider it again at their discretion.

Thank you to everyone who took our survey on USAC-sanctioned racing. We promised to share the results with the community, and this message does that. The board has not made a decision yet. This is simply a summary of what the survey found.

One note on the numbers: "respondents" means all 212 people who took the survey, and "members" means the current SDVA members among them. We reviewed the responses for integrity and are confident they reflect genuine input from our community.

Who responded

212 people responded. 143 are current members, about 48% of our roughly 300-member roster, which is a high response rate. 37 are past members and 32 have never been members.

Where people landed

Current members: 48% leaned support, 21% opposed, and 27% were open, with the rest undecided. Of the members who took a clear position, support to opposition ran about 69% to 31%. This is a strong plurality of the members who responded, not a vote of the full membership, since about half the roster did not weigh in.

Non-members (past and never-members): 19% leaned support and 54% opposed. Of those who took a clear position, opposition led about 74% to 26%.

All respondents who took a position: about 42% leaned support, 35% opposed, and 24% were open or undecided.

What people care about

Among respondents who said they need USAC upgrade points, 85% support USAC racing, as do 72% of those who want stronger competitive fields.

Among those opposed, the concerns are primarily USAC's national gender policies (41%) and a worry that our culture would shift over time (36%), rather than cost or paperwork (48% said cost is not a factor for them). About a quarter of respondents (57) oppose any affiliation with USAC on principle.

Scheduling

57% find Saturday acceptable, 55% favor a dedicated weekend day that leaves Tuesday Night Racing and Friday Night Racing unchanged, and only 6% want USAC folded into the existing race nights.

To protect people's privacy, we have not published the individual written responses, as many named or referred to specific members of our community. The board has read and carefully weighed every one of them.

What happens next

The board will make a decision about USAC racing at its meeting on this Sunday, June 14th. Per our bylaws, members are welcome to attend. After the meeting, we will share the decision along with an explanation of how this feedback shaped it.

Thank you again for taking the time to participate, and for being part of this community.
