Starting off a busy race season with .juniors as we headed to the U.S. for the regatta this past weekend 🇺🇸 The team proudly flew the 🇨🇦 flag as the only Canadian junior crews at the event.

After a solid winter training block, it was great to see these athletes kick off the season with a bang! 💥

⭐ U19 Girls Quad – An impressive 5th place finish in the A final, competing in a fast and talented field.
⭐ U19 Boys Quad – A strong 6th place finish in the B final, racing against tough competition.

These results showcase the commitment, consistency, and dedication of our athletes. Always a pleasure to work with this team—looking forward to a busy and successful season ahead!

Technique Tuesdays - Erg Drill 👇

This drill is excellent if you struggle to understand the concept of suspension throughout the stroke and the engagement of key muscle groups during the stroke.

Understanding which muscle groups to use, and when to use them during the stroke, is crucial for improving your performance.

To do this drill, you’ll need one of the following:
- A boat tie, secured around the back of the chain guard
- A partner to stand behind the erg and firmly hold the handle at the catch position
-A TRX rope tied under the main frame of the erg

What should the drill feel and look like?
- Shoulders slightly in front of hips
- Feet connected to the foot stretcher (both the balls and heels of your feet should push flat down through the stretcher)
- Lats engaged
- Core engaged and braced
- As you press into the footplate, recruit the glutes, quads, and hamstrings
- Focus on relaxation in the shoulders and keeping them low

The goal of the drill is to improve your ability to maintain connection throughout the drive phase.

How to perform it:
Try doing 10-15 sets of a 5-second lift and hold off the seat, lifting an inch or two off the seat. After completing this, incorporate the drill back into your normal stroke.

Remember, using the correct muscle groups in the right order will lead to a more efficient stroke and lower splits for less effort.

I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in rowing for 14 years now. I first started rowing at age fourteen and from there, quickly found out how much purpose and fulfilment the sport gave me. After an 8 year period of competitive rowing, I transitioned to coaching as my new purpose in the sport.

I grew up in the UK and lived there until my mid twenties. I then decided to move my life to the west coast of Canada, a place I’ve been able to call home for the past 3 years in bonny British Columbia! 🇨🇦

Since I started coaching 7 years ago, I have enjoyed building relationships and helping people achieve their goals and pursue their passions.

Row Better focuses on all aspects of indoor and on water rowing, inclusive to all abilities, ages and goals within the sport. I am starting row better not only to coach people but build an inclusive community for all those that take a love to the sport.
