At Peahi (Jaws), Tom Dosland dropped into a massive wave in 2016 and ended up free-falling from the lip, an estimated 40 feet straight down. It looked like he was falling off a cliff before getting swallowed by the power of the ocean.
What’s even crazier? He survived without serious injury and was back in the water the next day. That’s the mindset of true big-wave surfers, respect the ocean, take the hits, and keep going.
Moments like this remind us how powerful and unpredictable the sea really is.
Respect to all big-wave surfers pushing limits out there.

Few surfing families can match the raw talent and fearless spirit of these three brothers. Nathan, John, and Ivan grew up with Pipeline as their backyard classroom, and that powerful upbringing shaped them into some of the most versatile and gifted surfers of their generation.

Tom Carroll is widely regarded as one of the most influential competitive surfers of the 1980s and a pioneer of powerful modern surfing.

He is a two-time World Surfing Champion, winning the ASP World Tour titles in 1983 and 1984. During his competitive peak, Carroll stood out for his strength, precision, and fearless approach in heavy waves, especially at Pipeline in Hawaii, where he consistently pushed the limits of performance surfing.

His style helped shape the transition toward a more powerful and committed form of competitive surfing in the 1980s, influencing future generations of surfers around the world.

One of the most defining moments of his career came in 1985 at Pipeline, when a severe wipeout during competition left him seriously injured. That incident became one of surfing’s most talked-about examples of the ocean’s power and danger, and it deeply impacted his perspective on life and surfing.

After his world title years, Carroll continued to surf at a high level and remained involved in the surfing community, respected for both his achievements and his long-term influence on surf culture.

Today, he is remembered not only as a champion but also as a key figure in the evolution of modern competitive surfing and power surfing style.

Mark Liddell is a Hawaiian surfer who became well known in the 1970s and early 1980s. Born in California in 1960 and raised in Honolulu, he was part of the influential Hawaiian free-surfing scene and was closely associated with Montgomery 'Buttons' Kaluhiokalani. His fast, stylish approach helped define the era's "hotdog" surfing style.

Mark Liddell surfed mainly around Waikiki and yearly Hawaiian breaks and was featured in numerous surf films and magazines during the late 1970s and early 1980s. His smooth, nimble style made him one of the standout surfers of that generation.
