Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis®: Far Beyond Compared to Pilates
Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® are not Pilates overlaps—nor are they comparable. Juliu Horvath himself stated unequivocally, that he had never practiced or studied Pilates before the creation of the Gyrotonic Expansion System®.
In his own words, the method did not arise from a professional analysis, imitation or strategy, but from a spontaneous unfolding of movement during a deep energetic awakening — a Kundalini experience — while living in isolation on St. Thomas Island:
“There was nothing there — just insects and frogs, water and nature... And that's where it all happened. The sky opened, and things fell on me. ” — Julius Horvath
He adds that, although his training in dance, swimming and gymnastics naturally influenced the way his body moved, the core of the system — its spirals, its breath, its multidimensional flow — was not built consciously.
He was received, channeled and integrated He sprouted from within
Comparing this system to Pilates—a method developed in a completely different context, with a distinct mechanical and anatomical focus—is not only incorrect, but also overshadows the spiritual and energetic nature of the Gyrotonic Expansion System®.
This is not a system designed to “train the body. ”
It’s a pathway of listening, reorganizing, and being transformed through movement—and this cannot be replicated through the lens of techniques from an entirely different paradigm.

Honoring the Essence of the System
In Brazil, it was Rita Renha who introduced the Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® methods, ensuring that they remained true to their essence. She is a central voice in preserving the integrity of the system, and her performance is grounded in a direct experience with Juliu and a deep understanding of the somatic, energetic and multidimensional nature of the method.

These publications emphasize that Gyrotonic® is not a technical overlay or a re-reading of previous forms of movement. It's a complete system—that reorganizes posture, breath, perception and energy—from the inside out.

Accountability for Truth in Education in Motion
It is critical that movement educators and training institutions provide truthful and accountable information to the public. When people seek bodily practices—whether for health reasons, rehabilitation or self-development—they deserve clarity, integrity, and access to comprehensive systems that honor the human intelligence as a whole.
Promoting the idea that it is necessary to study Pilates in order to then follow Gyrotonic® or Gyrokinesis® is misleading and untrustworthy. This favors commercial agendas, not students. Worse: you risk distorting the path of a method that was never meant to be dissected or absorbed by others, but experienced and transmitted in its full vibrational coherence.
Let's honor each system for what it truly is — and educate them with conscience, not convenience.
