“... All my life I've strived to be as strong as you and fought showing any sign of weakness. But what I failed to realize is the power of the duality of strength and softness—something you’ve always possessed. I’ve always believed life to be black and white, to be strong or soft, but never both. But here my role model is, dancing in the grays and better for it.
I like to think of myself as an adult, but every day I’m still learning from you. I'm learning that strength and sensitivity, toughness and compassion, stoicism and empathy do not have to be mutually exclusive.
There is a gray area.
That gray area is where dads raise daughters, where they raise them to be sweet and strong, a fighter and a lover, resilient and kind-hearted.
And you made the gray area full of diamonds.”

Working your ass off for years to have the experience of graduating is priceless in itself. 2020 grads may have their degree but the fact that they don’t get to walk across the stage makes me sad for them. (Also it’s been a year & I still can’t believe I never have to go back to college... medic school maybe but at least no more college) Congrats to everyone who also has this feeling now🙏🏼

I don’t know exactly what it takes to be a mom. But if my mom has set an example of exactly what it takes: it takes sacrifice, empathy, endurance, compassion, and a whole lot of patience.

Every mom is different, every family is different. And my mom is exactly who and what I needed to become who I am today. While I do not know what it takes to be a mom, I do know what it’s like to be an auntie and to be a dog momma. It's... stressful at times, when lives are dependent upon you. It’s scary, when you know anything could happen at any given time. It’s at times infuriating (even though most human kids don’t need to be told every fu***ng day to stop peeing on their brother). But it is fu***ng amazing too, and for my momma to be selfless and brave and still love as deeply as she does even through all these things is something I respect.

My mom deserves everything great. She deserves peace and happiness and to be selfish.
But because she is who she is and does what she does, she will continue to sacrifice all that... just so her kids can have peace and happiness and selfishness.
