We set five alarms in the morning, rush around packing lunches, prepping water bottles and checking if bags are packed . . .
. . and then we wonder why our kids dig their heels in when it comes to putting their shoes on or getting out of the door on time

✨ Urgency triggers threat ✨

Which mean that when we rush our kids with anxiety in our voice (and in our body), their brain doesn’t speed up, it freezes or fights back

💡 Try anchoring your morning in connection first this week

A quick moment of calm eye contact, a hug, or a quick check in into their world before you start directing their steps changes how their brain receives your requests, it leads to cooperation

⁉️ What’s the hardest part of your morning routine right now? Let’s talk about it in the comments below 👇

Quick reminder as school starts back up: homework battles are rarely about the homework 📚✨

They are usually about overwhelming feelings, sensory overload, and a child’s need for connection after spending 6+ hours regulating themselves at school

We need to stop viewing homework, morning rushes, and grades expectations as behavioral battles to win and start viewing them through the lens of brain development, nervous system regulation, and connection

If you want to build peaceful, sustainable routines this school year without resorting to yelling or constant power struggles, I’m here to guide you 🫶

The unique age between birth to around 3-4 years old is a special time when so much is developing and forming inside your child: emotions, attachments, self-esteem, speech, focus and attention, sensory processing and even their intellect

Here’s what you should avoid doing during this period of your child’s development:

❌ 1. Don’t discipline for showing their emotions.
If your child is crying, whining, screaming – they are not manipulating, not being “bad”, they are just communicating their emotional state to you. At this age kids don’t have the skills to regulate their own emotions, they will learn to do it by watching us!

❌ 2. Don’t speed up their development
Early academic education, reading, advanced math, algebra at three – all of this has a negative impact on the developing mind. What’s important for this age group is movement, autonomy, connection and play.

❌ 3. Don’t compare your child to other kids
“Look at Max, he’s already . . .”
These comments destroy self-esteem. Each child develops at their own pace and you should only compare them to themselves and their progress

❌ 4. Stay away from too much control
Overcontrolling and many “no!” creates anxiety and insecurity in your child. It’s much more beneficial to set up wider boundaries and let your child have autonomy within those boundaries

❌ 5. Encourage curiosity and boundary pushing
If your child is very obedient and conforming at 3 or 5 years old, that could mean that they are too scared to lose connection with you. It’s important that your child throws tantrums, tries to see how far they can push boundaries, and lets you know what they want and don’t want. All this behavior tells you that your child is developing appropriately

How do your kids win their arguments? 😅😉

Truly, good come backs and sharp thinking is a good thing 👍 they try them with us (safely) so that they learn how to stand up for themselves when not with us
