Link in Bio for RSVP and more details. This is For You If You..

Want to practice sensing yourself within mental qualities like trust, openness, compassion, and curiosity
… you want a way to measure the effects of doing this.
… and you want to begin to establish this as an automatic way of being for yourself.
Are curious to learn about your own anatomy, physiology, and evolutionary history in a way that is straightforward, scientific, and tangible.
Know there is an abundance of valuable information inside of your body and want support accessing it.
Want to learn how to use movement, touch, and perception to activate your natural state of self-learning, self-healing, and self-development.
And you want to do this in community :-)
No experience necessary. All bodies and minds willing to focus and support themselves and each other in sensing are welcome, including people with more limited mobility. We Will Do Some

Playful easy skill games to ease into sensing and movement
Simple embodied anatomy lessons you can see and sense within yourself
Somatic movement and perception training practices from the Physio-Mentale Entwicklung somatic method
Verbal reflection and playful movement to integrate your discoveries
Practical somatic tools you can use anywhere, anytime
Community connection with other curious people interested in self-learning and moving

The body is a system

Like any other system that you learn to operate, e.g. software, a machine, an instrument, managing people, certain information is more useful as feedback for how to masterfully use the system.

How does a newborn human change from a body that must lie helplessly wherever its caregiver places it into a self-sufficient body that can stand, sit, jump, walk, run, roll around, etc.?

It grows some muscles, yes. But mostly, it learns how to organize its musculoskeletal system in gravity with support from the floor by listening to sensory information.

The baby is not learning through words or concepts.

Its mind is acutely focused on information from sensory receptors in the muscles, joints, fascia, and on the skin.

This incredible feat of balancing all of our weight on two feet comes naturally to us.

We take it for granted that we can organize our bodies in this way because we don’t remember how strange this felt the first times we tried to learn.

But as babies, we hadn’t developed the patterns of assigning emotions of frustration and fear and concepts of impossibility and urgency when something felt strange and new.

We could listen to sensation and use this sensory information for learning and development of how to operate our bodies.

We could do this without the mind moving to focus on emotions and concepts.

You can still use sensory information to find more elegant, efficient, and pleasant ways to organize your postures and movement... by becoming aware of the organization of your thoughts and emotions.

Practice becoming aware of where your body is asking for attention and sensing there with compassion and curiosity.
Allow for subtle adjustments and movement. This is the system naturally finding new ways to organize.
Try on the belief that this subtle sensory information is intelligent and that your movement is intelligent. You did this when you were a baby and look at what you’ve learned to do.

“Active muscles consume more ATP by far than any other tissue in the body. This is why chronically constricted, actively straining muscles can become such a significant energy drain upon the rest of the organism; they demand the lion’s share of our blood flow, leaving less nutrients and oxygen for the activities of other tissues.” - Deane Juhan

Lengthening and shortening muscles help circulation by pumping nutrients into the intercellular space and pumping deoxygenated blood out of the area. While chronically contracted muscles reduce circulation by squeezing the small arteries and capillaries which service the working cells with glucose and oxygen.

Not to mention the demand chronically tense muscles put on your attention if there is pain or discomfort.

So we’ve got chronically tense muscles costing a whopping:
* Massive amount of ATP
* The opportunity costs of where that ATP could be used, e.g. digestion, thought, sport, recovery, etc
* Pooling of old blood containing carbon dioxide and other waste products in tissue that needs fresh blood with nutrients
* Attention heckled by pain and discomfort repeatedly
* The opportunity costs of using that attention elsewhere

What can we do?

Chronic means there is a pattern. We need to interrupt this pattern and experience new ones. It is a pattern of tension through posture and through movement.

The first step is to observe and accept the current patterns.

Sense the area of chronic tension with curiosity, compassion, and patience.

If you can, and want to, use a soft sensing hand to amplify awareness to the area. Sense what is here now.

Notice your thoughts and emotions when they arise, and welcome your mind back to sensing curiously and compassionately.

Allow whatever is there to express as long as it wants to. This might be pleasant or unpleasant. Stay curious :-)

Notice that the next moment is unknown.

Sense the development and change happening in that area and allow for subtle gentle movement.

Allow more of your body to become part of this movement expression.

Come to an end when you’re ready and notice how you are now.
