History

Kajukenbo is a well-respected, self-defense based martial art that was created between 1947 and 1949 in what was then known as the U.S. It is considered by many to be the first self-defense style developed in the United States (Black Belt Magazine, 1994). One of the founding fathers of Kajukenbo is Sijo Adriano D. Along with four other martial arts masters of diverse cultural backgrounds,

Sijo Emperado developed a highly effective, integrated self-defense method that is unparalleled by any one martial art style. Kajukenbo incorporates five different self-defense systems, each represented by a syllable in the word KA-JU-KEN-BO. KA - Korean Karate, Peter Choo
JU - Judo, Joe Holck / Jujitsu, Frank Ordonez
KEN - Kenpo, Sijo Adriano D. Emperado
BO - European and Chinese Boxing, Clarence Chang


About the Instructor: Master Sifu Rex V. Cabanas

Rex started his self-defense martial arts training at age 10 in Ken Shu Kan BotokuKai under Sensei James Miyaji in a community called Waipahu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He moves to San Diego in 1978 and continued his training under the tutelage of the late Grandmaster Shi-Zu Allen A. Grand Master Shi-Zu Abad is an inductee to the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and an internationally recognized instructor. Rex assisted and taught numerous class under Grand Master Shi-Zu Abad and since 1999 has been the Master Sifu for the children, teens', and adult self-defense classes at Canyonside Recreation Center. Rex continues to train in KAJUKENBO and is always open minded in learning from other self-defense martial arts styles. Season's Greetings students! Our 16th annual End of the year Pot Luck, Variety show and Raffle is this Saturday, December 9th from 1030 to about 1245pm. Sign up sheet for a talent and a dish to bring is on our board. Uniforms are mandatory as we will be taking our class photo. Also, don't forget to bring a dollar or two for a raffle ticket. Who knows you might win that smart TV!

Hi students, about a week ago recreation center staff tried calling everyone to cancel classes for today, June 13. My apologies for cancelling last minute. Mr. James' daughter invited me and my family to her high school graduation. Make up class will be determined at a later date. Thank you for understanding and see you all next class, this Thursday or Saturday.

This event is open to all our students and their family. Sign up sheet is on our board, so don't forget to sign up, who knows you may go home with a raffle prize!
