Today I turn 53. 🎂

As I reflect on another year around the sun, I’m reminded that aging is a privilege that not everyone gets to experience.

People often ask me how I stay motivated to work out after all these years.

The answer is simple.

I don’t train because I want to look younger.

I train because I want to live better.

I want to have the same energy, strength, and quality of life in my 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond that I enjoyed in my younger years.

Over the years, I’ve learned that a good life isn’t built on one big decision. It’s built on thousands of small choices made consistently.

Move your body.

Lift weights.

Eat well.

Take care of your health.

Get enough sleep.

Surround yourself with good people who encourage you, challenge you, and genuinely want to see you succeed.

Spend time with family.

Appreciate your friends.

Be kind to others.

Never stop learning.

And most importantly, don’t wait for a special occasion to enjoy life.

Life is unpredictable.

I’ve learned through my own journey that tomorrow is never guaranteed.

So celebrate today.

Laugh more.

Love more.

Forgive more.

Take chances.

Chase your dreams.

Make memories.

Take care of your body because it’s the only place you have to live for the rest of your life.

At 53, I am grateful.

Grateful for my wife and daughters, Mia and Misha.

Grateful for my family and friends.

Grateful for my clients, my community, and everyone who has been part of my journey.

And grateful for another year to continue growing, learning, serving, and becoming the best version of myself.

Here’s to another year of health, purpose, resilience, and living life to the fullest.

Live your best life. The clock is always ticking. 💪🙏🎉

I want to sincerely thank everyone who has supported Eyes Shut, Mouth Closed. The messages, conversations, and support truly mean a lot to me. 🙏

If you’ve read the book, I would greatly appreciate it if you could take a few moments to log into your Amazon account and leave a review. Reviews help more people discover the book and, more importantly, help spread awareness about the history and resilience of the Vietnamese boat people and immigrant families alike.

Everyone has a story.

And even if our stories are different… many of us share similar struggles, sacrifices, fears, hopes, and challenges in life.

One of the reasons I wrote this book was to preserve these stories and remind future generations about the courage it took for so many families to leave everything behind in search of freedom and opportunity.

Your review not only supports me as an author — it helps keep these stories alive for others to learn from and appreciate.

Thank you again for all the love and support. It truly means more than you know.

This project was personal for me.

The photos on top are my real journey through my 20s, 30s, and now into my 50s. The photos on the bottom show an alternate version of what my life could have looked like if I stopped taking care of myself physically and mentally.

Same person.
Same genetics.
Different daily choices.

When I first started working out in my early 20s, I honestly thought fitness was mostly about appearance. I didn’t realize I was slowly building discipline, confidence, structure, resilience, and long-term health.

Over time, I realized something important:
Your body keeps score of how you treat it.

The workouts.
The food choices.
The sleep.
The stress management.
The consistency.
The excuses.
The discipline.

It all compounds over decades.

This post is not about perfection or vanity. It’s about wellness, longevity, energy, mental health, and being able to continue showing up for the people you love.

As we age, many people think decline is just “part of getting older.” Some of it is. But a lot of it is also lifestyle.

Movement matters.
Strength matters.
Health matters.

Your future self is being built right now by the choices you make every single day.

The choice is yours.

We all have limits.

But sometimes… those limits are only the ones we place on ourselves.

Fitness teaches you something powerful. Your body is capable of so much more than your mind believes at first. One more rep. One more jump. One more day of showing up when you feel like quitting.

Growth happens when you push past comfort.

Fitness is not just about building muscles. It’s about building discipline, confidence, resilience, and mental toughness. It teaches you to fight through struggle, self-doubt, and adversity.

Be your best self no matter where life takes you.

Whether you’re a student, parent, entrepreneur, athlete, or someone simply trying to become better than yesterday — give your best effort in everything you do.

Your journey will look different from everyone else’s.

Don’t compare.

Don’t quit.

Just keep showing up.

Because your limit might actually be limitless.

And one day, you’ll look back and realize the person you once thought was impossible to become… became you. 💪

Places like Phinology are more than just coffee shops. They are built on sacrifice, resilience, and the dreams of immigrant families who came from war-torn countries searching for a better future.

Behind every cup of coffee is a story.
A story of struggle.
A story of survival.
A story of parents who sacrificed everything so their children could have opportunities they never had.

Change does not exist without sacrifice.

Many immigrant families arrived in America with little more than hope, determination, and the willingness to work harder than anyone around them. Today, they are building businesses, supporting their families, contributing to their communities, and inspiring the next generation to continue pushing forward.

That is one of the reasons I wrote Eyes Shut, Mouth Closed.

My book highlights the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of the Vietnamese boat people and immigrant families whose stories are often untold or forgotten. It is a reminder that behind many success stories are journeys filled with pain, uncertainty, courage, and perseverance.

When we take the time to listen to these stories, we begin to appreciate not only how far people have come, but also the strength it took to get there.

Support local businesses. Support immigrant dreams. Support the stories that helped shape America.

And never forget — many of the opportunities we enjoy today were built on the sacrifices of those who came before us.

Last night, I had the honor—and honestly, the pressure—of being one of four panelists at the AAPI Heritage Celebration at USD.

One moment really stood out to me.

I met a sweet woman who arrived in America in 1961. Before last night, I had never met anyone from the Vietnamese community who came here that early.

To put that into perspective:
Before 1975, there were only about 2,000–5,000 Vietnamese in the U.S.
Today, there are over 2 million Vietnamese Americans.

That moment reminded me how far our community has come—and how many untold stories are still out there.

She brought my book to the event, and I had the honor of signing it for her. That meant a lot to me.

It was a great turnout, and it left me thinking about something important.

There’s so much more we can do to support one another within the AAPI community.

One of the most important things we can do is listen more—and assume less.

The AAPI community is incredibly diverse, but sometimes we focus too much on our differences instead of what connects us.

When we take the time to truly hear each other’s stories, we begin to see the common threads:

Family.
Sacrifice.
Resilience.
The desire for a better life.

Another key is showing up for each other—not just during heritage months, but in everyday life.

Through support.
Through mentorship.
Through creating space for each other’s voices.

At the end of the day, it comes down to unity through respect.

We don’t need to share the same experiences to stand together.

But when we respect each other’s journeys…
we build something stronger. đź’›

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 🙏

I’m honored to be one of four panelists speaking tonight at the AAPI Heritage Celebration at USD.

I’m proud to represent the Vietnamese community and to share the story of the Vietnamese Boat People — a story of courage, sacrifice, and resilience that shaped generations.

I carry deep pride in our culture…
our strength…
our perseverance…
and the mental toughness that helped so many endure unimaginable challenges in search of freedom and opportunity.

These stories matter.

Because if we don’t share them…
they fade.
They get lost.
And future generations may never fully understand the sacrifices that made their lives possible.

Tonight is more than just a celebration — it’s a reminder to honor those who came before us, to carry their legacy forward, and to continue building something meaningful from the opportunities we’ve been given.

Grateful for the opportunity to speak, to represent, and to keep these stories alive.
