“Doing nothing” is often a whole lot of ✨something✨ when it comes to trauma healing ❤️‍🩹

One of the biggest surprises for many of my clients is learning that healing isn’t just what happens during the breakthrough, the boundary conversation, the hard decision, or the therapy session.

Healing happens in the spaces in between 🙌🏼

The pause

The walk

The ten minutes sitting in your car

The 15 minutes in between appointments where you’re not consuming, producing, fixing, planning, or performing

For many of us, our nervous systems spent YEARS running on urgency, hypervigilance, over-functioning, and adrenaline until eventually crashing into exhaustion, shutdown, or burnout.

So when life finally becomes a little safer, your body often begins processing what it had to postpone in order to survive.

This is why one of the FIRST practices I teach my clients is to create buffer time.

your body needs time to integrate

Even five minutes between meetings.

A slow cup of coffee or tea before opening your laptop.

Sitting in silence before walking into the next thing.

Your nervous system was never designed to be a machine.

It was designed to pulse between…

Activation 🔁 Rest

Effort 🔁 Recovery

Engagement 🔁 Integration

For so many over-functioning women with a trauma history, rest feels anything BUT restful at first 😵‍💫

It actually tends to feel threatening 😬

Your body’s so used to urgency, tracking, fixing, planning, scanning, and holding everything together that the moment you stop, your nervous system sounds the alarm:

🚨 “What the hell are we doing?”
🚨 “Are we behind?”
🚨 “What if we forget/lose momentum/get left behind/never start again?” 😭

This is why TINY pockets of rest matter so much!

So you can be the best scientist of your own life and gather evidence.

Try this:

Set a timer for 3–5 minutes.

✨Lie down
✨Hold your coffee
✨Look out the window
✨Let your body be unproductive on purpose

Then (this is the most important part) ASK:

👉🏼 Did I still exist after 5 minutes of nothing?

👉🏼 Did everything fall apart?

👉🏼 Did I spontaneously combust?

Or

👉🏼 Did I pause… and come back?
