The Barnes Tennis Center is owned and operated by Youth Tennis San Diego, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. It was built in 1995 and completed in 1997. This 4.5 million dollar facility was made possible with generous public and private donations. The Center is named after our lead donor family - the "George E. Barnes Family Junior Tennis Center." The Center is dedicated to the youth of San Diego

. Children 18 and under have court priority over adults with advanced reservations! The capital campaign was spearheaded by Dr. Homer Peabody, Jr.. Youth Tennis San Diego gratefully acknowledges Dr. Peabody's tremendous contribution to make this dream a reality. Today, the Barnes Center serves as one of San Diego's finest jewels, and is a model for several communities throughout the Nation. Tennis Center is home to Youth Tennis San Diego offices, all Youth Tennis San Diego junior tournaments, Barnes Academy tennis programs, After School Tennis - founded by Kathy Chabot Willette special events, adult programs, corporate programs, a library and educational programs including our "Junior Aces" Program for ages 3-5. Come and visit us and see our wall of donors who made the Barnes Center possible. Enjoy a walk around the facility and read the inscriptions on the memorial bricks. San Diego talent is joining the Serving the Future Open! 🎾

Two local standouts, Trevor Svajda and Keegan Smith, are set to compete at Barnes Tennis Center September 20–27.

Trevor Svajda has established himself as one of the top players in college tennis at SMU, finishing the 2025–26 season ranked No. 4 nationally in singles after reaching No. 1 in the ITA rankings four times.

A Point Loma High School graduate, Keegan Smith went on to become a three-time ITA All-American at UCLA and captured the 2019 NCAA Doubles Championship.

Now, both return home to San Diego to compete in the Serving the Future Open alongside Eliot Spizzirri, Nishesh Basavareddy, J.J. Wolf, and more.

Getting to the kitchen isn't luck. It's a 3-step process. 🥒

1️⃣ DROP — Take the pace off. Your third shot doesn't need to be a winner, it needs to be unattackable. Land it soft into the kitchen and start moving forward.

2️⃣ RESET — They will speed it up. That's the plan. Soft hands, paddle out front, absorb the ball and put it back down. This is the step most players skip, and it's why they get stuck in no-man's land.

3️⃣ DINK — Now you're at the line. Patience wins here. Move them side to side and wait for the pop-up.

Master these three and you go from defending to dictating.

The first players are announced for the Serving the Future Open!

Professional tennis returns to Barnes Tennis Center September 20–27 for the Serving the Future Open, an ATP Challenger 75 featuring rising stars and established professionals from around the world.

The initial player list includes:

🇺🇸 Eliot Spizzirri | ATP No. 112
The 2025 San Diego Open champion and former two-time ITA National Player of the Year.

🇺🇸 Nishesh Basavareddy | ATP No. 163
Former Stanford standout, two-time ITA All-American, and ATP Tour semifinalist.

🇺🇸 J.J. Wolf | ATP No. 253
Former World No. 39 and Ohio State standout.

And that’s just the beginning. More player announcements are coming as we get closer to tournament week!

Welcome Ryan Eveloff, Barnes’ New Director of Pickleball!

We’re excited to welcome Ryan Eveloff to Barnes Tennis Center as our new Director of Pickleball.

A former collegiate tennis player at Arizona State University, Ryan Eveloff went on to compete professionally in pickleball on the PPA Tour from 2022–2025, reaching the singles semifinals in 2023 and earning multiple wins over Top 20 players.

Now, Ryan Eveloff is bringing that playing and coaching experience to Barnes, joining our pickleball staff as we continue to expand opportunities for players of all ages and levels.

Ryan Eveloff will coach clinics, private and semi-private lessons, and take a leading role in growing our youth pickleball programming, including the upcoming launch of our High Performance Youth Pickleball Academy.

We’re excited to have Ryan Eveloff on the Barnes team and can’t wait for what’s ahead!

**Barnes needs your voice before Friday at 5 PM.**

As part of the City of San Diego’s Affordable Home Development Master Plan, a large portion of the Barnes Tennis Center parking lot has been identified as a possible site for affordable housing.

This parking is crucial to keeping Barnes accessible and supporting the thousands of players, families, and visitors who come through our gates each week.

But this is about more than a parking lot.

Every year, Barnes supports more than **15,000 kids playing tennis**, many stepping onto a court for the first time. Every week, **7,000 to 8,000 people** come to Barnes to play, practice, compete, connect, and be part of our community.

Barnes is also a “third place.” Not home. Not work. A place where people belong. It’s where kids build confidence, families spend their weekends, and neighbors become friends.

The City is asking for community input. **This is our opportunity to make sure they hear directly from the people who use Barnes and understand what this place means to our community.**

**HOW TO HELP:**

1. Complete the City’s Affordable Home Development Master Plan Community Survey.
2. Under “Select the site you will be providing input on,” choose **Barnes Tennis Center**.
3. Share how often you use Barnes, what you use it for, and your input about the proposed development.
4. Share this post with others in the Barnes community.

**The survey closes tomorrow, Friday, August 28 at 5 PM.**
