Our Story
JKI was founded by Masayuki Shimabukuro Hanshi. This page has been approved by his wife Kanako Shimabukuro and his children Erik, Aimee and Melissa, who now run the JKI dojo in San Diego, California. Currently at this location we offer Traditional Japanese Karate through instruction in this empty hand martial art. We would like to welcome all of you who are interested in this form of self defense. At JKI we teach Sh*to-Ryu Karate-do which is one of the four major styles on the mainland of Japan. Raised in Osaka, Japan Shimabukuro Hanshi trained in this martial art which in turn taught his students at this very place in San Diego, California.
There have been numerous students that have come through the dojo doors through the last 3 decades to train. All are welcome back anytime to train in the spirit and well being of Shima Senseis karate. Ossu!!!
