We are terribly sad to share the news that our colleague Stephanie MacGilfrey has unexpectedly passed away.

For many of us, Stephanie was far more than a coworker. She was a valued member of our community and a familiar presence in the lives and work of so many people since she began her work at Extended Studies in 2006. Stephanie brought tremendous passion and dedication to her work in the OSHA team. Among other responsibilities, she traveled to Guam, Saipan, and other Pacific Islands to bring training to workers who might otherwise have had limited access to it. But she did much more than deliver training. She built relationships. The workers who came to her classes became, in many ways, an extended family. Stephanie was their advocate, always looking for ways to ensure they received the training, support, and opportunities they needed to work safely and build better lives. Her commitment to this work and to the people she served was deeply personal, and it was evident to everyone who worked alongside her.

That commitment to others was at the heart of who Stephanie was. Those who worked alongside her will carry their own memories of her intelligence, kindness, humor, determination, and friendship, and of the extraordinary passion she brought to her work and to the people she served.

This Safe & Sound Week, make sure your workers have a seat at the table. Safety works best when everyone's involved.

Worker Participation means engaging workers at all levels in establishing, implementing, evaluating, and improving safety and health in the workplace. That looks like:

✅ Listen and ask for feedback
✅ Empower workers with safety and health information
✅ Recognize workers for contributions to worker safety
✅ Partner for safety and health planning

What makes a safety and health program effective?

A strong program is built on three core elements working together: Management Leadership, Worker Participation, and Find and Fix Hazards. It's a proactive way to manage hazards in the workplace and prevent injuries and illnesses before they happen.
