Love them or hate them, these tips could help more people love them.

Wall balls are regularly voted one of the hardest HYROX stations.

The good news?

Most people don’t need more wall balls. They need to improve the qualities that make wall balls easier.

🏋️ Get stronger
Front squats build the strength to make every rep feel lighter.

🧘 Improve mobility
Better ankle and hip mobility creates a more efficient squat position.

🎯 Build accuracy
A lighter ball allows more quality practice and fewer missed targets.

😌 Get comfortable
Goblet squat holds teach you to relax and breathe in the bottom position.

🔄 Keep moving
Small sets > big sets. Consistent movement beats blowing up and staring at the target.

Wall balls aren’t just a fitness test.

They’re a test of strength, mobility, accuracy, efficiency, and pacing.

Could HYROX actually make you weaker?

For some athletes, yes.

If a powerlifter suddenly doubles their running volume to prepare for HYROX, they would need to train very intelligently to avoid losing strength.

The same is true for any athlete.

HYROX absolutely builds strength endurance, work capacity and resilience. But maximal strength is a different quality.

The more training time shifts towards running, circuits and race-specific volume, the less time and recovery is available for heavy lifting.

That doesn’t mean HYROX is bad for strength.

It means strength needs to be trained intentionally.

That’s why beginners often feel stronger after starting HYROX, while advanced athletes usually need dedicated lifting to continue getting stronger.

HYROX builds fitness exceptionally well.

Building maximum strength still requires strength training.

One of the most common questions we get.

The answer is yes… if your training matches your current movement ability, strength and recovery.

The problem is many people improve aerobically faster than their joints, tissues and movement efficiency can adapt.

That’s where overuse injuries start:
• Knee pain
• Hip flexor irritation
• Achilles / calf overload
• Lower back pain

Usually not from HYROX itself.
From doing too much volume too soon.

More simulations. More lunges. More wall balls. More fatigue.
Doesn’t always equal better preparation.

Good HYROX training should build:

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a running and endurance biased fitness race that combines:
🏃 Running
🔥 Functional workout stations
💪 Strength endurance
🫀 Pacing & work capacity

One of the biggest reasons the sport has exploded worldwide is its simplicity and repeatability.

The movements are easier to learn than many traditional competitive fitness formats, making it approachable for first time racers while still being extremely challenging to master at a high level.

That doesn’t make it easy.

The best HYROX athletes still build:
• elite aerobic fitness
• pacing strategy
• durability under fatigue
• efficient movement
• strength endurance
• mental resilience

STATION 8: WALL BALLS 🔴

The final station.
Where pacing, breathing, and composure decide your finish time.

Most athletes don’t fail because they’re weak.
They fail because they panic.

Here’s how we coach it, aligned with current HYROX standards:

✔ Full-depth squats every rep
Hip crease below the knee.
No half reps when fatigue kicks in.

✔ Hit the target clean
Accuracy saves more energy than forcing extra power.
Misses = wasted reps + blown heart rate.

✔ Stay relaxed on the catch
Death-gripping the ball destroys your shoulders late in the race.

✔ Breathe with the movement
Exhale on the throw.
Inhale on the catch.
Calm breathing = faster final reps.

✔ Break before you fail
Smart sets beat standing under the target staring at the wall.

✔ Use your legs, not just your arms
Drive from the squat.
Legs create rhythm, arms guide the ball.

✔ Eyes locked on the bottom of the target
Consistent visual focus improves accuracy under fatigue.

✔ Doubles strategy matters
Short controlled sets + fast transitions usually beat hero sets.
