"What happens after a shido is called for noncombatively?" Does it incentivize players to engage more aggressively afterwards? Does it translate into more scoring?

Here is the second study in the sequence using the Judobase IJF data scrape: a retrospective observational study using within-match panel event-study (discrete-time hazard) designs with randomization-based (Monte Carlo permutation) inference and placebo simulation.

The results here are mixed, but important to understand the implication of regulation on effort exertion in a general sense. In the appendix of the paper (just the title page shown below - will make available later), I also run a parallel study with data from some UFC matches that will be a more complete follow-up study , which will also look at this affect to see if it generalizes across other sports like hockey and tennis.

I've been spending some time this summer polishing off some research projects I've been working on for fun that involve sports analytics applications in combat sports. Here is a VERY comprehensive analysis of IJF Judo since they've been collecting data in 2009. We analyze 221,875 competitors across 328,346 athlete-attributed within fight events - likely the largest study of IJF Judo ever produced.

I focus on measuring efficiency in this paper using some methods I've developed to measure systems inefficiency in energy production (power plants) that generate pollutant byproducts, and borrowed from that literature to model judokas using input-output data.

There are some interesting takeaways, but I wont' spoil them (newaza is for the ladies... in a good way...). Take a look at some of the descriptive graphs I've provided and see for yourself.

I'm also producing another event study and DiD causal inference analysis on whether or not aggressive penalization (shidos) does in fact facilitate more action (scoring) - spoiler alert, fighters are significantly more likely to score after bring penalized with shido. Stay tuned for that one. This one is almost 60 pages, I'll post the whole thing later this weekend when I have it 100%.
