Latrell Sprewell

It’s not every day that you find someone whose first name rhymes with their last name but, hello, Latrell Sprewell. He is both the only Latrell and the only Sprewell in NBA history, and “Spree” was definitely one of a kind. He made four All-Star teams but is best remembered for choking his then-head coach P.J. Carlesimo during a practice one day.

A forgotten part of that story is that after Sprewell choked Carlesimo, he was removed from practice and headed to the locker room. He then showered, changed and walked back on the court 20 minutes later to again attack the coach. He took a swing at Carlesimo and grazed him on the cheek before being dragged away by assistant coaches.

Shaquille O’Neal

Shaquille “Shaq” O'Neal is a retired professional basketball player and sports analyst on Inside the NBA. Shaq was first drafted into the NBA by the Orlando Magic in 1992. As one of the best centers in the history of the league, he also played for the Lakers, Heat, Suns, Cavaliers, and Celtics during his professional career. Throughout his career, he amassed a long list of awards and titles. In 2000, he became one of only three players to win the NBA MVP, All-Star game MVP, and Finals MVP awards all in the same year.

One of the most dominant big men of his generation, Shaq made a huge imprint on the NBA, as well as on the shoe industry. Smashing the stereotype that big men can’t sell sneakers, Shaq almost singlehandedly turned Reebok into a major player in the basketball shoe world with his popular Shaq Attack line, then followed that up with his low-cost Dunkman brand, moving millions of affordable sneakers through discount retailers to fans around the world. Finally, in 2006, Shaq inked a 5-year deal with Chinese brand Li-Ning, with whom he released a series of signature shoes.

Being a great player is not always about one's offensive proficiency. In fact, it is defense that dictates a team's offensive flow. In this regard, few have been as good as Dikembe Mutombo.

The 7'0'' from the Congo asserted himself on the defensive end from day one. His inside presence often changed the game plan of opposing coaches and players. In 18 productive NBA seasons, Mutombo achieved many great feats. Although his efforts to win a championship fell short, he left a legacy as one of the greatest defenders and rebounders in NBA history.

When your name is Lonzo Ball, or LaMelo Ball, then you’re destined to hoop. Sure, many other sports also use balls in competition, but being able to ball is a colloquialism for being able to play basketball.

Lonzo Ball’s outspoken father, LaVar, put a bullseye on his son’s back before he even played in his first pro game, but the younger Ball has settled into a solid point guard. His first name of Lonzo is also unique, as it’s not short for Alonzo or anything else, making him the first “Lonzo” in NBA history.

Frank Vogel wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of LeBron James when the then-Miami Heat superstar eliminated the coach’s Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals two years in a row in 2013-14. But now that the two of them are on the same side and working to win the Los Angeles Lakers a second NBA title in three seasons, Vogel has a full appreciation for the unique greatness that James brings to his teams.
