I crossed the border to see what rugby in Tijuana was all about — and found a club full of passion, hospitality, and everything that makes this sport special.

Saturday is a rugby day — even in Tijuana 🇲🇽🏉

After 80 minutes of rugby, Cuervos showed us what a proper post-match looks like: food, beer, songs, dancing and two teams sharing the night together.

Different country. Different culture. Same rugby traditions.

And all of this is happening just across the border from San Diego.

Can’t say enough good things about the people at Cuervos Rugby and what they’re building in Tijuana. If you’re part of a US rugby club looking for your next tour, put Tijuana on the list.

Three players. Three completely different paths to the same rugby pitch in Tijuana. 🇲🇽🏉

Manuel drives in from Tecate because Cuervos became his second home.

Drew has played rugby in the US and England - and found himself pulling on a Cuervos jersey in Mexico.

Adam and the Tucson Magpies crossed the border looking for something simple: a game of rugby and some new friends.

Different countries. Different languages. Different stories.

But as Adam put it:

“This is a worldwide game. I love seeing the big world get a little bit smaller.”

That’s what club rugby does. 🌎🏉

“Respetar y dar.” 🇲🇽🏉

That’s the philosophy behind Cuervos Rugby Club in Tijuana.

For their head coach, rugby is about more than what happens during 80 minutes on the field. It’s about respect, community, giving back, and building something for the next generation.

From supporting local orphanages and people in need, to introducing kids in Tijuana to rugby, Cuervos are helping grow a game that’s still finding its place in this part of Mexico.

And after 80 minutes of hitting each other?

You shake hands, have a beer together, and go back to being brothers.

This is rugby in Tijuana. This is Culture RFC. 🇲🇽🐦🏉

Rugby in Tijuana 🇲🇽🏉

I spent a year living in Chile, which is where I learned most of my Spanish, so getting the chance to actually use it while telling a rugby story in Mexico made this one pretty special.

But what impressed me most was the club itself.

These guys don’t have endless teams nearby or an easy schedule of games. Competition can mean organizing a referee, getting a field ready and finding another club willing to travel across an international border just to play.

And they make it happen.

Two countries, two clubs, one Saturday night under the lights.

The further I take Culture RFC, the more I realize rugby is everywhere. You just have to go looking for it.

Seattle ➡️ Tijuana 🇲🇽

A few hours after crossing the border, I was sitting with players, referees, and rugby people I’d never met before.

No phone service. No real plan. Just an invitation to come see what rugby looked like in Tijuana.

What I found was a group of people willing to do whatever it takes to make rugby happen. Organizing matches, setting up fields, traveling long distances, and building a community from the ground up.

Next up: Match Day.
