The best players start the downswing by separating the lower body from the upper body. When the lower body leads, the club has time to shallow and sequence properly. This drill helps you feel that separation and improve both timing and strike.
If sequencing or downswing timing is something you’re working on, head to the link in our bio. Our coaching plans help you learn how to start the downswing correctly and build a motion that’s easier to repeat — without guessing.

Shallowing the club isn’t always a technique issue — sometimes it’s a mobility one. Limited shoulder range of motion can make it very difficult to shallow the club and often forces an over-the-top move instead. A simple 90/90 test that Dave Phillips at TPI does helps you understand whether your body can actually make the movements you’re trying to coach.
If over-the-top moves or swing limitations are something you’re battling, head to the link in our bio. Our coaching plans help you identify whether the issue is mobility or technique, so you know exactly where to focus instead of guessing.

If you keep missing the middle of the face, this is a great way to retrain your strike and path. Set it off the heel, swing inside, then hit it out of the toe and you’ll start finding the sweet spot again. It’s an easy range drill that makes a big difference to your iron contact.
If this is something you struggle with, you don’t need more tips, you need the right plan. We’ve created coaching plans designed to fix specific problems faster.

These three moves are key if you want to swing more from the inside.
Creating space with your hips, getting your arms deeper, and delaying the upper-body turn makes it so much easier for the club to shallow. When those pieces work together, the downswing feels smoother and your contact improves fast. Try these feels next time you practice and see the difference.

We need width in the backswing to get away from that nasty slice pattern.
Everyone's range of motion and backswing will look different - focus on getting your hands farther away from your chest at the top of your backswing and go from there.

If you turn too early in your downswing you're most likely going to be coming over the top.
Instead, focus on shifting towards the target and allowing your hands and arms to then drop down the body and achieve that shallowness. This will help stop that dreaded over the top which leads to all kinds of issues with your strike

Stability doesn’t mean staying completely still.
If you freeze your lower body, you take away your ability to rotate and move athletically. By keeping your feet grounded but allowing your hips to move freely, your swing becomes more natural and powerful.

Still Coming Over The Top? Try This.
Sometimes you just need a clear visual to change your path. Place an impact bag just outside and ahead of the ball — now you have to get the club coming from the inside.
If you’re still coming over the top, comment “Slice” for our simple 5 step system to help you figure out how to fix it.

Do you need more shift or more rotation in your swing? Understanding the balance between the two is crucial for consistent ball striking. If you swing over the top, you’re likely rotating too fast and need more lateral shift. If you shift well but get stuck, you need more rotation to free the club. Mastering this balance will help you compress the ball and hit more consistent shots.
