Here is a great recap of how our Duel in the Desert weekend went! Thank you, MORE Racing for a great event and award!
Congratulations to Avid Motorsports, your Sabina Racing / PCI Race Radios TRUE GRIT Award winner from the Slash X Duel in the Desert! Check out their story below:
This was the 1st official MORE race for the 1185 Car driven by Cole Wimmer and Co-Dawg Parker Beswick. We bought a stock bug in March of 2021 and began building in our driveway. Cole graduated high school in June and started The Fab School about 10 days later. We worked weekends and nights to build the car and finished in November, but had some new car blues to work out. After working some bugs out of the bug, we entered King of Hammers where we finished but the course took its toll on the car. We got home and got to work on upgrading what we felt were the weak links on the car. Fast forward to Duel in the Dessert we had some small issues during prerun (spare tire hit our front shock reservoir line, so we lost the shock). The Class 11 family is great and we were able to borrow a shock and some nitrogen from another driver, getting it installed about 10 minutes prior to the start of the race. The car was great on the first lap but we had a front fender work its way loose as the car took its abuse in the rough stuff. Pulled into the pit after lap 1 and had to yank the fender off. Unfortunately, damage was done to the other front shock. Lap 2 started out with 1 shock and fender down. The team pushed the car hard and lost the other front fender, which also took out the shock line, leaving them with no front shocks and a rough ride. Fast forward to lap 3, lost both rear fenders and about RM 14, the clutch cable snapped. Driver and Co-dawg radio’d in to the pit as neither had ever driven without a clutch. Pit crew (the dads) quickly gave instruction and after a few attempts, 1185 was in motion again. Finished lap 3 and still had time to start lap 4 before the cutoff so we went for it. Picked up a couple places and made it to the finish. After the race, we noticed we lost a front hook stop and 3 of the 4 bolts holding the front beam on were gone. The 4th was loose. Fortunately, our cage/chassis was helping to keep the beam in place. We were tired, sore and weren’t sure if we could finish but had to give it a try and were impressed that the car made it. We have a lot of work to do to try and prevent some of these issues but it’s all part of learning. Thanks to MORE for putting on a great race, we’ll see you at the next one!
