HISTORIC COURSE HIGHLIGHT: NORTHWOOD CLUB ⛳

In 1946, the newly formed Northwood Club bought land in Dallas from oilman Buddy Fogelson and his wife, actress Greer Garson. Two of the country's leading architects, William Diddel and Perry Maxwell, were brought in to look it over. The members chose Diddel.

Over his 53-year career, Diddel designed nearly 300 golf courses, seven of them ranked among Golf Digest's All-Time Toughest. He co-founded the American Society of Golf Course Architects in 1947 and mentored a young Pete Dye along the way. He died in 1985, at 101 years old.

In 1952, Northwood hosted the U.S. Open, won by Julius Boros. It remains one of only three Texas clubs to ever host the championship.

Nearly 80 years later, it's still one of the toughest tests in Texas golf.

On This Day: September 10th

Kathy Whitworth won the 1978 National Jewish Hospital Open in Denver, CO at Green Gables CC.

She won at least one tournament every year from 1962 to 1978 for a streak of 17 years. It's the longest such streak in LPGA history.

The Solheim Cup tees off this week, and Texas Golf Hall of Fame members have been part of the story from the start.

Kathy Whitworth captained the very first Solheim Cup Team USA in 1990, then again in 1992. Judy Rankin picked up right where she left off, captaining back-to-back teams in 1996 and 1998. Four of the first five Solheim Cups, captained by Texans.

Stacy Lewis carried that torch more recently, captaining Team USA in 2023 and 2024, and she's a future Texas Golf Hall of Fame member herself.

This week, Angela Stanford carries that legacy forward as Team USA captain. Same state, same standard.

Good luck this week, Angela.

is this weekend! 🇺🇸

One of the most decorated and highly regarded amateur golfers in the world during the 1990s, Brad Elder was selected to represent the United States at both the Walker Cup and Arnold Palmer Cup competitions in 1997.

At the Walker Cup, Elder posted a perfect 4-0 record, as the U.S. easily defeated Europe, 18-6. None of his matches even reached the 18th hole.

Elder collected Singles wins by 5&4 and 2&1 margins. He also notched Four-Ball victories by 4&3 and 3&2 marks. He was undefeated with a 4-0 record for the U.S. Team at the Palmer Cup for the victorious Americans at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.

On This Day: September 4th

Our Class of 1986 Professional Player Inductee, Earl Stewart Jr. cemented his name in golf history. He did so as he became the first and only host Professional in history to win a PGA Tour event on his home course when he won the Dallas Open Invitational (now known as THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson). He held off the big names of Arnold Palmer and Gay Brewer by a single stroke to finish at six under par in 1961.
