before King Academy gained its current name in 1982, it was named Riley Junior High. The name change was advocated by community leaders and spearheaded by campus teacher and popular community Activist Rev. Raymond Callies Sr.
King Academy is also the starting point is for the annual MLK March, which was also spearheaded by Callies and continues to this day.
