AUM (or OM) is the most sacred and universal spiritual sound in Indian philosophy and spiritual traditions. It is considered the primordial sound of the universe — the vibration from which all creation arises.
AUM is made of three sounds:
A (अ): Represents creation - The waking state (Jagrat) - The physical world - Associated with Brahma (the creator)
U (उ): Represents preservation - The dream state (Swapna) - The mental/subtle world - Associated with Vishnu (the preserver)
M (म): Represents dissolution - The deep sleep state (Sushupti) - The causal/unmanifest state - Associated with Shiva (the dissolver)
The Silence after AUM: Represents Turiya — the fourth state - Pure consciousness - The Absolute / Brahman - Beyond mind, time, and space
AUM represents: The entire universe (past, present, future) - The cycle of creation, existence, and dissolution - The three states of consciousness - The three worlds (physical, subtle, causal) - The Supreme Reality (Brahman)
Chanting AUM calms the nervous system - Aligns body, mind, and breath - Helps in meditation and inner stillness - It is said that AUM is not just a sound, but the vibration of existence itself
