When I was little, my grandpa used to tell me that fairies drank their tea in the woods, under leaves shaped like spoons, at tables made of mushrooms. I believed him, of course. He said if you ever found a teapot in the garden, you had to leave it be—because it might be someone else’s kitchen.

I never found a teapot back then. But I never forgot the story.

Years later, when we cleared out my grandparents’ place, we found boxes of scrap wood, plans half-sketched on napkins, bits of trim, and one old note in his shaky handwriting that just said: “For the teapot house.”

I don’t think he ever meant for it to be real. But I built it anyway. Took my time with it. Used his old tools, his saved-up hinges, and even that weird round window he bought at a flea market in the 90s. I shaped the roof like a lid. Bent the handle by hand. Added wildflowers, just like the ones that lined their old mailbox.

Now it sits tucked in a corner of our yard, surrounded by bee balm and daisies. A place for stories. For quiet. For wonder.

Kids come running up the path thinking it’s for them. And in a way, it is. But it’s also for me. For him. For all the things we half-believe as children, and carry in our pockets into grown-up life.

Fairies or not—he was right about one thing.
Sometimes, a teapot in the garden really is someone’s kitchen.
