Quail opens November 1 and runs to February 28, and chachalaca now runs on exactly the same dates.

Worth knowing if you plan around the old calendar. One caveat on the chachalaca half: it is open in four Valley counties and nowhere else, so for most people around here this is a quail season with a footnote.

What it means for the gun is the more useful half. An upland gun that has sat since last February is the one we see in October with a sticky ejector, a stock that has dried and shrunk at the head, and chokes that have not been out since the last season.

Bring it in before November rather than the week you need it. Our gunsmiths do that work here, at both stores.

If you hunt Bexar and your buddy hunts Wilson, you are not under the same rule this year.

The Parks and Wildlife Commission expanded the doe days to sixteen consecutive days in a list of counties. Bexar is not on that list. Guadalupe, Wilson, Karnes and Gonzales are, and so is Comal east of IH 35.

That line runs straight through the middle of who we sell to. A man with a lease forty minutes east of the shop is working to a different calendar than the one hunting closer in, and most people find that out in November.

Bexar is not shut out. Antlerless there runs on MLDP tags, and there is a late season the fourth through the seventeenth of January for antlerless and unbranched antlered bucks. It is a different calendar, not a shorter one.

Where the season actually sits, halfway through September.

Dove is open and stays open to 25 October. Archery opens 3 October.

General season is 7 November. Far enough out to feel like it does not matter yet, close enough that a r***e you have not sighted in is already a problem.

A bag limit is not a target.

It is the number the state settled on as the most a person can take without the population feeling it, worked out from survey data and revisited year to year. Nothing in it says you ought to get there.

The season is set so the birds can carry it. Whether your particular piece of ground stays worth hunting is decided by how it gets hunted, not by the limit.

The usual worry about a first sh***un for a kid is that it fits this year and not the next one.

That is a fair worry. A twelve year old is not the same shooter at fifteen. Plenty of families solve it by buying too much gun on purpose and letting the child grow into something that kicks too hard and never gets shouldered right, which is how a young shooter quits.

Grow Up Trade Up is our answer to it. Fit the young shooter to the right long gun now, and when it is outgrown, bring it back and the full purchase price goes toward the next one that fits. Ri**es and sh***uns, bought off our floor. There is no age limit on it, but it is a young shooter's program more than anything else.

Day ten of dove season, and the corn is already moving. Feeders are getting filled across South Texas for a general season that does not open until 7 November.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension has guidance on this. Aflatoxin comes from naturally occurring fungi in drought and insect damaged kernels, and it keeps growing in storage. Warm plus wet is the recipe, which describes a lot of barns in September.

Extension recommends corn labeled less than 20 ppb aflatoxin, not corn sold in plastic bags, and cool dry storage with clean feeders that do not leak.

Here is the part that runs backwards. Deer are ruminants and do not seem as susceptible. The vulnerable ones are the grain eating birds, quail and turkey, and the small mammals, squirrels and rabbits. The corn you set out for deer is really a question about everything else on the place.

We are not veterinarians. That is Extension's guidance, and it is worth ten minutes at the feed store before you fill the barn.

The deer will likely be fine either way. The quail are the ones counting on you to read the label.

Archery runs 3 October to 6 November, and on a place you already hunt, the value of it is not solitude.

October is the last five weeks the deer move the way they move when nobody is bothering them. Where they water, which crossing they actually use, which way they leave a field. Come November the first r***e changes all of it. Feeders get pressure. Deer that were crossing at four in the afternoon start crossing at midnight.

So what you learn in October is worth more than what you see in December. By December you are watching an animal that has already adjusted to you.

Dove season is open, and most of what comes over you is a mourning dove. Not all of it.

Three doves are legal in Texas and the limits are not the same for all three. Fifteen a day, and no more than two of those can be white-tipped. That is the one people miss, because the mark that names it only shows when the wing opens.

The Eurasian collared-dove is the other one worth knowing. It is not protected, so it does not count against your fifteen.

You are already in the field for dove. That is free scouting for November, and almost nobody uses it that way.

While it is this hot, water is doing the deciding. Deer are not ranging for feed in the middle of a South Texas afternoon. They are near whatever still holds water, and so is everything else on the place.

So mark it while you are out there. Which tanks still hold. Which troughs are running. Which crossings have fresh tracks and which have gone quiet since spring. The water moves with the weather. The trails mostly do not.

General season opens 7 November here in the North Zone. That is nine weeks, which is also about how long it takes to get a r***e bought, fitted and zeroed without rushing it. Most people leave that until the last week of October.

Legal shooting hours run from half an hour before sunrise to sunset.

Most people get the morning right. The evening is where it goes wrong, because sunset is not dusk. There is still usable light after legal hours end, and that light is exactly what talks a person into one more bird.

Sunset moves about a minute a day through September. The time that was legal on the first is not legal on the thirtieth.

Check the actual time for the actual day. Your phone knows it. So does a game warden.
