Your truck has airbags, lane assist and automatic braking. None of it does a single thing for you after the impact.

This kit rides on the headrest behind the driver's seat. Reachable from the front seat, reachable through the open door, and it doesn't slide under a bench where you'll never find it in the dark on the shoulder of a highway.

Fall puts more miles on everybody. Road trips, hunting season, kids in the car every morning. If your vehicle kit is currently four loose bandaids and a napkin in the glovebox, this is the week to fix it.

That pouch riding on the outside of the pack is not decoration.

MOLLE webbing means one pack covers every trip you actually take. Long weekend, lash on the extra pouch for the med kit and the food. Two-hour out-and-back, strip it off and stop hauling ounces you do not need.

You are not buying a bag. You are buying a system that changes with the plan.

Your pack size has nothing to do with your height.

Two people the same height can need completely different packs, because a pack is sized to torso length — the bony bump at the base of your neck down to the top of your hip bones. Not your inseam, not your shirt size.

Get it wrong and the hip belt sits in the wrong place. It cannot grip the top of your pelvis, so the load you thought was riding on your hips is back on your shoulders by mile two. No amount of frame fixes that.

Swipe through for the measurement, the strap order most people run backwards, and the walk test that tells you more than any size chart on a product page.

Most people who need rescuing were only going out for a few hours.

That's the thing about day hikes. Nobody packs for a night out because nobody plans on one. Then the weather turns, or the light goes faster than expected, or somebody rolls an ankle, and a four hour walk becomes a very long night.

Pack for problems instead of working down a list. Water and a way to treat more. A way to make fire. One more layer than the forecast says. A light, with a spare. Something to repair gear with.

Then add the part that weighs nothing: knowing how to use all of it before you need to.

Most backpack bottle pockets are built for a bottle nobody actually carries.

We ran the Rougarou pocket with what people really bring: insulated YETI and RTIC bottles. Wide, heavy, top-heavy the second they're full. A pocket cut for a thin plastic bottle either won't take them, or lets them walk out the first time you lean over a creek.

The fix isn't a bigger pocket. It's a shock-cord adjuster that closes down on whatever you put in it, positioned so the weight isn't fighting the load.

Small detail, right up until you watch a full bottle roll down a side hill.

Comfort isn’t just about padding. It’s about using the right foam.

Not all foams are created equal.

Some collapse under weight. Some lose their shape over time. The right foam supports the load, keeps its structure, and makes long days on the trail a lot more comfortable.

It’s one of those details most people never think about, but it’s one we refuse to overlook.

Two is one, one is none. People repeat it so often they've stopped hearing it.

It does not mean buy everything twice. It means knowing how you'd solve the problem if the first answer quits on you. Lighter dies, you still need fire. Filter clogs, you still need water. Headlamp goes dark, you still need to see.

Redundancy isn't extra weight for its own sake. It's a second path to the same outcome, and sometimes that second path is a skill rather than an object. Skills don't add ounces and don't break.

Go through your kit tonight and find the one thing with no backup. That's your weak point, and now you know where it is.

A day at the range reminded us why you need two kits, not one.

The trauma kit is for catastrophic bleeding. Tourniquet, pressure, the things that buy minutes. It stays sealed, and you hope it stays that way for the rest of your life.

The other kit, the one nobody photographs, is the one you actually use. Blister pads. Tweezers. Antiseptic. Ibuprofen. A cut thumb on day one of a three day trip is not an emergency, but it will absolutely ruin the trip if you cannot deal with it.

People buy the dramatic kit and skip the boring one. Then they limp back to the truck.

We're at the Leander gun show this weekend, August 29 and 30.

Come by and put hands on the gear. Photos are fine for deciding you're interested and useless for deciding whether something fits. Try a pack loaded, see where the belt sits on your hips, pull on the hardware.

Bring the pack you're carrying now if you want an honest read on it. We'll tell you if it's fine.

There's no universal weight where you suddenly need a frame, and anybody handing you one number is guessing.

Two people can carry the same load and have completely different days, because torso length, conditioning, terrain, pace and the shape of the load all change the math. Water is dense. Winter insulation is bulky. Tools make pressure points. A pack has to manage the shape and movement of a load, not just the total on a scale.

So skip the number. Load the pack with the gear and water you'll actually carry, adjust it properly, and walk it far enough that pressure points show up. Can the hip belt take weight off your shoulders? Does the bag stay upright and close? Does it still ride right after you've eaten half the food and repacked?

Those answers are worth more than any advertised limit.
