In the attached video, the responding officer was ill-prepared for what he encountered. Reminder: We need to live "aware" AND "prepared."
Another Reminder: When encountering a violent dirt-bag, we should never engage them toe-to-toe or wrestle with them. Pepper spray, or a now-legal-in-Texas collapsible baton, such as an ASP, should be our response to an unarmed but physically stronger assailant.
For us, our Every Day Carry (EDC) should include either police-grade pepper spray (such as SABRE Advanced Compact Pepper Spray), or, a small lightweight collapsible baton (such as the ASP LeverLoc Foam Airweight, or the ASP Agent Concealable Baton - 50cm).
We need to use our BRAIN and TOOLS to compensate for a physical disadvantage.
Thankfully, in this video the backup officers handled this situation fairly well. "Drop the gun,, bang." Followed by "bang-bang-bang-bang-bang-bang."
But still, they apparently shot for mass, not center-mass. This is a common mistake during deadly-force encounters.
The assailant in this video survived and was likely still a threat when they stopped shooting. This, too, is a good lesson for us. We shoot and keep shooting until there is no longer a threat. We don't shoot to kill, but we do shoot and continue to shoot until there is no longer a threat.
Lastly, none of these people expected to get into a shooting that day. That's an important reminder for us, too.
