This Memorial Day, while many of us look forward to the laughter of kids playing baseball, leisurely bike rides, and the comfort of a backyard BBQ, it’s important to remember that for some, this day carries a weight of pain and sorrow.

To the mom in this photo, Memorial Day isn’t just a holiday; it’s a reminder of the immense sacrifice her family has made for our country. I would tell her, “I’m so sorry for your loss,” and “Thank you. Thank you for everything your loved one has given up for us all.” I’d want to give her—and that baby—a big, heartfelt hug.

John F. Kennedy captured the essence of genuine gratitude when he said: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter the words but to live by them.”
