Marinduro:🥇Expert F40+

This was not the result I was expecting. Nor was it even my goal.

A year ago, I did my first Enduro at this race. I entered the Expert category but a week before the race I lost my nerve and switched into the Sport category. I was too scared to race the extra stage the Expert and Pro categories had to do.
~
I had a great race and finished 2nd in my category. I was happy with how I rode but disappointed that I hadn’t done the Expert category.
~
Kyle meanwhile was too scared to race at all. We come from a road triathlon background and we have made HUGE progress as XC MTB racers over the last few years but Enduro racing is an entirely different matter. It’s all about the timed downhills!
~
Enter Brian Astell. Kyle decided he wanted to get better at descending and I sure as hell wasn’t going to let him improve without me! So we hired Brian who helped us to make a big leap forward. For Kyle it was confidence. For me it was in correcting my body position and improving my brake control.
~
We also bought eMTBs. Kyle got his first and made more progress. Grr. I used to be the better descender and now he was literally leaving me in his dust. So I got one too. The ability to ride more laps on a bike with more suspension and chunkier tires was a game changer.
~
Yesterday we both lined up with confidence in the Expert category. I was still nervous about stage 6 but I knew that I could ride it all.
~
I made a few small mistakes but I was happy to PR every segment, to keep the rubber side down and to have a clean run down stage 6. All on my XC bike.
~
I had no idea how many women were in my category nor did I care. I was way ahead of all the other Expert women on the course due to the (untimed) climbing and not wanting to stop but I knew that meant nothing!
~
I was blown away when Kyle looked up the results and told me that there were four women in my category and I was in first place. Whatever. They hadn’t finished yet. Of course I was “winning”.
~
An hour later and I was shocked that the result held. I have a lot more progress to make but this one made me appreciate how far I’ve come on this journey.

Medal Monday!
~
While we were busy at camp in Mallorca, our athletes were busy crushing their races back in the US.
~
First up we’re celebrating .kuznicki who took on the gravel race at and absolutely nailed it. This race is no joke: 90 miles with over 10,000ft of climbing. At 7.5 hours on the bike it was also Brien’s longest ever ride.
~
The biggest challenges in races this long are often mental, especially when you have to ride past the finish line several times during the race. Coach Kyle helped Brien to be well prepared though, prescribing brutal multi-loop, long training rides that were both physically and mentally challenging in the lead-up to the race. They also worked together to make sure Brien had a solid hydration and fueling plan in place which is absolutely essential for long events like this.
~
Doing the training and executing on race day were all Brien’s though. This race was the result of doing the work, being consistent and following the plan on race day. We are super proud of you for this one, Brien!
~
Elsewhere in NorCal, Paul was out giving it his all at a tough trail race: a 10k with 1200ft of elevation gain! He is making the podium a habit in these trail races now, finishing 2nd overall in this one. Great job, Paul! The weight vest strategy we’ve been employing in his training to combat the lack of hills where he lives is really paying off.
~
Over in Tennessee, Steph was out doing Steph things at the North Knox Sprint Tri, going HARD from the gun to the tape. Despite a course that did not play to her strengths (a super short swim and a comparatively long run, every swimmer’s nightmare!), she still won her F55-59 AG and finished 6th woman overall.
~
Congrats to all three of you! All great examples of athletes successfully juggling training and racing with busy lives.

Mallorca Camp Day 6!
~
Our final day of camp was an epic one. We rode Sa Calobra, the crown jewel of Mallorca’s cycling roads, as part of a 60 mile, 6600ft ride.
~
The views everywhere on this route are stunning, from the first climb up Sa Battalia to the famous Repsol gas station, to the sweeping views of the Mediterranean from Sa Calobra, to the picturesque views of the north of the island as we flew back down the Col de Femenia and into Pollensa for a well earned celebratory lunch.
~
Coach Kyle provided top notch SAG support, encouragement and photography services and we were once again well fed by for breakfast and dinner.
~
What a week! The goodbyes at the end of camp were tinged with sadness but the great memories will last for a long time.

Mallorca Camp Day 5!
~
It was a swim~bike~run kinda day at camp today!
~
After a Chef Kyle special breakfast, we headed to the pool in Alcudia for some video analysis, drill work and recovery swimming.
~
Next stop was the track in Inca for running drills, form work, more video analysis and a cheeky couple of fast 400s. The focus this week is mostly on the riding but we always like to take these opportunities at a camp to do some coached swimming and running too.
~
After a lunch of bocadillos (yummy Spanish sandwiches!) and Mallorcan almond cake in the cute old town of Campanet, half of the group headed out for an optional recovery spin on the beautiful country roads at the base of the mountains. The others chose a few extra hours of rest and relaxation at the house.
~
Dinner was another delicious three course affair from followed by an early night ahead of tomorrow’s grand finale: the one and only Sa Calobra.

Mallorca Camp Day 4

What a day! Today we shared one of my favorite road rides of all time with our campers. The Coll de Soller ~ Deia ~ Port de Valldemossa ~ Valldemossa loop which takes in Mallorca’s stunning MA10 coastal road along with several beautiful mountain climbs and descents.
~
This is a BIG ride but there were still calls for more so some of us then rode an extra 20 miles or so home despite having a van waiting to shuttle us back!
~
Our ride today was supported in pro fashion by the wonderful Bartolomé from and we fueled and refueled with more delicious food from the talented .
~
Lots of solid work in the bank, lots of smiles and only one moment of disbelief that we actually designed a route with an out and back down and back up 3 miles of switchbacks to a dead end! (It’s a great road!!)

Open water swimming on the Mallorca Ironman and 70.3 course at Port d’Alcudia.
~
A visit to the market in the old town of Alcudia and lunch in the main square.
~
A beautiful ride in the Tramuntana mountains: up the Coll de Femenia and down the stunning Sa Battalia. (Despite some calls for a post-lunch nap instead of the ride, everyone crushed this ride!)
~
Another delicious dinner at the house.

Camp is in full swing!

A Head Chef Kyle frittata breakfast.
~
An epic ride to the famous Cap de Formentor.
~
Lunch at the beautiful Cala St Vincenz where the color of the water has to be seen to be believed.
~
And because 55 miles of riding with 4500ft of climbing wasn’t enough … a spicy little brick run with a few more hills than anyone wanted!
~
Big day of work = big dinner! Another amazing four course special from .
~
Everyone’s going to sleep well tonight!

48 hours in Girona before we hop over the Med to Mallorca today. Scouting out future possible camp locations! We’re always planning for the next thing!
~
Riding the roads in Europe is such a joy compared to where we live. And we found almost empty roads within 15 minutes of the bustling city.
~
Great riding. Cycling culture. Old s**t. Delicious food and drink. This place is a winner! Let us know if wanna join us for a camp here in 2027!

Medal Monday!
~
We’re on a roll with these now! Another weekend, another race at Granite Bay and another podium for one of our athletes. Congrats to Deb on battling the wind and rain on Saturday to take 2nd place in her AG and 4th overall female. I love that half of those top four women were in the 50-59 AG!
~
Deb executed really well across all three legs of this “character building” race for a great start to the triathlon season!
