With at least one confirmed case of New World screwworm in Texas (Zavala County, 6/3/2026), what has been a "maybe" problem is now a certainty. The potential and severity of an outbreak depend on myriad factors, and conservation organizations, including Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, are staying on top of the latest information.

'Tis the season! Fawning season, that is. And we received a couple of fawn photos last week that we wanted to share.

Sawyer Harris walked up on a bedded elk calf before snapping a pic and quickly finding a different draw to explore, so the new mother cow did not take offense to his presence.

Wiley Dabbs photographed a pair of pronghorn twins with their new mother near Marathon, TX.

Cool stuff, guys!

Our free-range axis hunts are in full swing!

These deer are among the wariest animals we pursue, and are a challenge even for our most seasoned guides and hunters.

Our guides use "roars" - the axis buck's unique mating call - to locate bucks and stalk them on foot. It takes skill, patience, persistence, and a good bit of luck for it all to come together.

The weather can also be dicey this time of year, ranging from blazing sun that keeps animals hidden in the cool shade of oak motts to violent, fast-moving thunderstorms that can ruin a hunt in a matter of minutes.

But when it all works out, there's nothing like it. Excellent table fare, beautiful trophies, and every outing is a unique adventure.

No fences, no feeders, just real hunting!

WSI is fortunate to work with landowners who use all available tools to steward their ranches. One of those tools recently deployed on a property WSI works with is prescribed fire.

Long before early North American settlers understood the science of controlled burns, Native Americans conducted "cultural burns" to shape their landscape and attract bison herds to accessible hunting areas. Today, land managers use prescribed fire to control brush, promote native grass growth, and improve soil quality.

In the Chihuahuan Desert, watersheds hold the key to habitat preservation and water infiltration/percolation. Prolonged drought and overgrazing have clogged many watersheds with invasive woody plants. Under the right conditions, controlled burns are a cost-effective and efficient way to restore these watersheds and prevent erosion.

This photo illustrates a successful controlled burn implemented to clear invasive whitebrush from key watersheds on a ranch in Brewster County. WSI is aiding this landowner in tracking the progress of these burns using aerial imagery, a convenient way to plan burn units and monitor the project's overall progress.
