I’m currently having this conversation with one of my dummies, but what’s not pictured is the fact that I’m having the same talk with several others. So, I thought this would be a great time to remind each and every one of you that patience is an essential part of your fitness journey.
Upon reading this you’ve probably assumed we’re talking about physical recovery from injury or illness. However, in this case we’re actually talking about recovery from burnout.
When I design your training schedules and give you an entire week (or more) off after a big race, that’s not me just wanting your body to recover, nor is it me being lazy or taking a break from thinking about you. That’s me making sure that we step back from the go-go-go leading up to the big event. Yeah, you’re on a post-race high, feeling pumped and ready to ride that into the next wave, but there’s a finite number of those highs. And when you reach the end that’s when the trouble starts. My job is to catch it before you do because sometimes the hole you dig gets so deep you never end up getting out.
In closing, if you’re in this for the long haul you must trust the process.
