Bringing leadership, healthy lifestyles and roller derby to the youth of Utah every Sunday from 10:00-12:00pm. Come check it out! Try it out with our loaner gear and see if it's for you. Boot Camp Day 1: We came out swinging.

Apparently nobody told these kids we were supposed to ease into the season.

We said “boot camp.”
They heard “choose violence.” 😅

Big hits. Fast feet. Questionable life choices. Excellent vibes.

And somehow… this was only DAY ONE.

So yeah. We’re doing great.

Our Travel Team coaches help athletes compete at the highest level.

Our Home Team coaches help build the skaters who may one day want to get there.

Home Team is where so much of the magic happens.

It’s where new skills become confidence. Where falling down turns into getting back up. Where skaters learn how to work with a team, challenge themselves, and discover just how much they’re capable of.

And behind all of that are coaches who understand that development looks different for every skater.

Our Home Team coaching staff is patient, encouraging, and committed to meeting athletes where they are while helping them take that next step forward.

Because not every skater starts in the same place.

Not every skater has the same goals.

And not every skater will take the same path.

But every skater deserves coaches who believe in who they can BECOME.

Meet Coach Shorty 🛼

Coach Shorty knows that putting talented athletes on the same track doesn't automatically make them a team. Great teams have to be built.

Shorty brings 16 years of roller derby experience to Wasatch Juniors, including 13 years with the Trainwrecks, Junction City Roller Derby's competitive travel team. Throughout her career, she's competed at a high level and developed extensive experience in strategy, teamwork, leadership, and what it takes for a group of individual athletes to become effective together.

But some of Shorty's most meaningful work hasn't happened during games.

Throughout her derby career, she's made mentorship a priority working with newer skaters as they navigate everything from basic skills and strategy to the frustration and uncertainty that naturally come with learning something difficult.

She's watched skaters walk in unsure of themselves and, with time, encouragement, accountability, and a whole lot of practice, become confident athletes and trusted teammates.

That's the transformation she wants to help create for our juniors.

Shorty's leadership also extends beyond the track. She's held multiple board positions with Junction City and currently serves as its Human Resource Director, focusing on skater and staff wellbeing, conflict resolution, team building, and creating a positive, inclusive league culture.

That experience brings an important perspective to our coaching team: how we treat each other matters.

Shorty wants athletes to learn how to communicate, work through challenges, support their teammates, accept feedback, lead when they're needed, and understand that being a great teammate is every bit as important as being a great individual player.

Because the strongest teams aren't simply filled with talented athletes.

They're filled with athletes who know how to make each other better.

Because at Wasatch, we aren't just looking for great skaters.

We're building them.

Roller derby asks a LOT from our athletes strength, endurance, balance, power, agility, and the ability to keep going when they’re tired.

That’s why off-skates training is an important part of what we do at Wasatch.

Our skaters have access to 3 days a week of strength & conditioning training included with their monthly dues, giving them even more opportunities to grow as athletes both on and off the track.

Right now, they’re putting in the preseason work with Coach Papa Loach; building stronger bodies, better movement, and a solid foundation for the season ahead.

Strong bodies. Strong skaters. Strong team. 🔥

Meet Coach Furious George 🛼

Coach Furious George (she/her) believes one of the best parts of coaching is watching a skater discover they're capable of more than they thought. George found roller derby through Salt Lake Roller Derby's Crash Course in 2023 and was hooked. She is now in her second competitive season with Wasatch Roller Derby, jamming for Midnight Terror, and her first season co-captaining Wasatch's new Nightmares team.

As a jammer, George understands that there isn't one "right" way to get through a pack. Different bodies bring different strengths, and finding your own style is part of becoming an effective athlete. She also knows the mental side of wearing the star: the pressure, quick decisions, trust in your teammates, and resilience required to reset after a difficult jam and go back out again.

That's the experience George is excited to bring to Wasatch Juniors.

In her first season coaching juniors, George is bringing jammer-specific training to the coaching team while getting to know how each skater moves, thinks, and approaches the game. She wants athletes to experiment, practice, make mistakes, and discover the techniques that turn their strengths into effective gameplay.

George also believes athletes grow fastest when they trust the people around them. Strong relationships create space to take risks, ask questions, struggle through something difficult, and keep trying until suddenly you can do something you couldn't do before.

And George knows she's still developing, too. She sees coaching as another opportunity to study the game, challenge what she knows, and become a better athlete and coach alongside her skaters.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing a coach can do isn't tell an athlete what they're capable of.

It's give them the tools to discover it for themselves.
Off the track, George is an architectural designer for a nonprofit specializing in accessible design and affordable housing.

Because at Wasatch, we aren't just looking for great skaters.

Meet Coach Skates 🛼

Coach Skates (they/them) knows what it means to grow up through junior roller derby because not long ago, they were the skater being coached.

Skates began their derby journey in 2018 with Happy Valley’s junior program before joining Wasatch Junior Rollers in 2019. They joined A*Salt in 2022, captained B*Salty in 2023, and earned their place on A*Salt in 2024.

After aging out, Skates continued competing with Wasatch Roller Derby, including captaining and helping grow the Nightmares and serving as a captain of Midnight Terror.

In 2025, Skates competed at Deep Blue in Reno, Nevada. The day after driving home, they landed in the hospital for three days and were diagnosed with adult-onset Type 1 diabetes. Just two days after leaving the hospital, Skates was back on skates playing roller derby a pretty perfect example of the determination they bring to this sport.

That journey gives Skates a unique perspective as a coach. They understand what it feels like to be the developing skater because they were one.

As a blocker coach, Skates believes great blocking starts with strong fundamentals but that every athlete moves, learns, and uses their body differently. Instead of forcing skaters into the same mold, they help athletes understand the fundamentals, experiment with techniques, and discover what works best for them.

Skates loves teaching the little details that can completely change a skater’s game: getting lower, using leverage, controlling space, working with teammates, and turning fundamentals into powerful blocking.

Their coaching experience extends beyond Wasatch Juniors. Skates coached Uinta Madness at Monsoon Madness and has helped train at the adult level, including helping Midnight Terror climb from the 50s into the top 20 following Malice in the Mountains.

Off the track, Skates attends SLCC and is working toward becoming a physical therapist, building their understanding of movement, strength, and the human body.

Skates grew up through junior derby. Now they get to help build the next generation.

Because at Wasatch, we aren’t just looking for great skaters.

We’re building them. 🛼💙
