Helix condemns white supremacy and police brutality. We see, hear and value black lives and seek to simultaneously elevate black community members and their voices and step back to listen and learn. We acknowledge that the anti-racism movement is not new; it’s over 400 years old.
As a team, we acknowledge the ways in which we perpetuate systemic racism, subconsciously and definitively, in our everyday lives and in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. We understand that justice work isn’t for “them” but rather for the collective; our liberations are entangled and we all must work together in different capacities to bring down systemic racism.
Helix is committed to educating ourselves as a team, reflecting on our privilege in order to actively dismantle white supremacy and systemic racism. We are committed to creating space for ongoing dialogues about what it means to be anti-racist, and making the Helix team and Ultimate Frisbee environment more inclusive specifically to black people and other BIPOC.
We came together virtually to start this discussion earlier in the month and will continue to have these dialogues with one another. Through a team donation and a teammate's company match, we were able to raise $3,000 and will be donating to the following organizations:
My Block, My Hood, My City - https://www.formyblock.org/
Chicago Freedom School - https://chicagofreedomschool.org/
Color Of Change - https://colorofchange.org/
Mikva Challenge - https://mikvachallenge.org/
We encourage the Chicago Ultimate community and the Ultimate community at large to donate where they can, continue to have conversations, listen, protest and find what lane(s) of resistance they can contribute to.
