Chicago Helix

Chicago Helix Helix is a Chicago womxn's ultimate team built on principles of transparency, cooperation, and hard work. Helix Love,

Katie Shiro and Jody Kissane

A new team of familiar faces, Helix was designed and created for busy but competitive women’s ultimate players. To maintain an ultimate-life balance, Helix will be practicing just once a week on the weekend, with a shorter optional skills practice during the week. Less practice time requires solid fundamentals as well as the ability to learn new offensive and defensive sets quickly and easily. We

are looking for strong, motivated players who are willing to put in the work it takes to be successful outside of team practice. The team will be built on 3 principles: transparency, cooperation, and hard work. Transparency: We are committed to open communication with our teammates, so everyone knows what to expect and why in terms of scheduling, playing time, and team goals. Cooperation: Each woman on the team has something valuable to bring to the table. Expect lots of round table discussions and huddles on what is working, and what isn’t. We want to hear you out and make decisions that are best for everyone on the roster. Hard work: We’re only practicing once a week, which means those practices will be both challenging and efficient. Helix players will be expected to train outside of practice and be ready to hustle during team time. We’re excited to get started, and can’t wait for tryouts. Please spread the word and be sure to fill out our survey if interested!

Helix condemns white supremacy and police brutality. We see, hear and value black lives and seek to simultaneously elevate black community members and their voices and step back to listen and learn. We acknowledge that the anti-racism movement is not new; it’s over 400 years old.

As a team, we acknowledge the ways in which we perpetuate systemic racism, subconsciously and definitively, in our everyday lives and in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. We understand that justice work isn’t for “them” but rather for the collective; our liberations are entangled and we all must work together in different capacities to bring down systemic racism.

Helix is committed to educating ourselves as a team, reflecting on our privilege in order to actively dismantle white supremacy and systemic racism. We are committed to creating space for ongoing dialogues about what it means to be anti-racist, and making the Helix team and Ultimate Frisbee environment more inclusive specifically to black people and other BIPOC.

We came together virtually to start this discussion earlier in the month and will continue to have these dialogues with one another. Through a team donation and a teammate's company match, we were able to raise $3,000 and will be donating to the following organizations:

My Block, My Hood, My City - https://www.formyblock.org/
Chicago Freedom School - https://chicagofreedomschool.org/
Color Of Change - https://colorofchange.org/
Mikva Challenge - https://mikvachallenge.org/

We encourage the Chicago Ultimate community and the Ultimate community at large to donate where they can, continue to have conversations, listen, protest and find what lane(s) of resistance they can contribute to.

We’re going to Regionals!! We had a tough Universe Point loss to Dish, win over Frenzy to qualify, and loss to Rogue in the 2nd place game for seed. We got so excited planning team lunch in Chinatown that we forgot to take a team pic.🥡But here is Pooka, our team mascot and fave sideline pup! We are not as cute as Pooka, but we’ll happily take the L on that one : )
