What is IgG? And how does it relate to foals?

🍼 IgG stands for immunoglobulin G also known as an antibody. These specialized proteins enable the foal’s immune system by binding to, neutralizing and eliminating infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses. Unfortunately, newborn foals enter the world without antibodies. Foals depend on antibodies ingested through their mare’s colostrum in first few hours of life to protect them from their new world filled with bacteria. FYI — The most common way bacteria enters the newborn foal’s blood stream is through their umbilicus. Frequent dipping of their umbilicus after birth with iodine or chlorhexidine is advised for the first 48-72 hours of age.

🧪 We strongly advise an IgG snap test ran 12-24 hours after birth to ensure adequate passive transfer. The snap test on the right is of a successful absorption of antibodies (>800) shown by the bright blue dot in the center. The test on the left shows failure of passive transfer (FPT = no dot at all,
