Congratulations to our recent Hartnell Athletics Hall of Fame inductees Julie Coy and the 1995 Men's Track & Field Team.

Julie Coy came to Hartnell College from Gilroy High School as a local stand out sprinter but little did she know she would leave a longstanding impact on the women's track & field team. In 1983, Coy would set the 100m record at 12.36 and follow that up as a sophomore with the 200m record of 25.41. What Julie didn't realize was that the 400m was her best event and her 57.47 set in 1984 would remain the program record for 30 years. While a student at Hartnell, Coy would commute to Salinas three days a week from Gilroy and worked at the Togo's in the Northridge Mall. Julie would go on to attend San Jose State University then make her way east to where she current resides in Connecticut.

The 1995 Men's Track & Field Team placed second at the California Community College State Championship on the strength of athletes in the distance events, pole vault and multi event. Brian Wilkinson dominated the 800m and 1500m winning both, Luis Granado placed 6th in the 5000m, Leo Fernandez was 4th in the 3k steeplechase, Mike James won the pole vault, Neil Lahey and Robert Macias placed 3rd and 5th in the decathlon. The team won the Norcal by a decisive 22 points tallying 89. Brian Wilkinson won the 800, 1500, and 5000m. Mike James won the Pole vault with Neil Lahey taking gold in the decathlon.

It is National Coaches Day and we would like to recognize our amazing staff. We are grateful for the passion and understanding they bring daily to provide our student-athletes the best possible experience. How many colleges can boast nine graduates of the program and ten who attended and competed at a community college? We truly understand the college community experience.

This Friday, Hartnell College host the first Pink in the Park (formerly the Toro Park Invitational). The meet will be pink themed for Breast Cancer Awareness Month with teams encouraged to wear their pink version uniforms.

The women's race will feature three Norcal Runners of the Week in College of San Mateo duo Ericka Dorn and Deia Kerseg and De Anza College ace Siena Pignataro. Clovis Community College comes in as the Norcal #1 ranked program with a rising Hartnell squad ready to test themselves versus The Crush. Coming all the way from San Diego is last year's 3C2A State Champion SD Mesa. Women's 3 Mile race will start at 10:30am.

In the men's race, The Olympians of SD Mesa make the trip to see test themselves over the hills at Toro Park. Lead by top Olympian Luciano Roberts, the Olympians should contend for the overall individual and team victories. Last year's individual champion Weston Greenelsh of Cuesta College is scheduled to compete to challenge Roberts as is last fall's Norcal runner-up Stephan Chapdelaine. Hartnell will counter with 14:25 runner Julian Vargas. The Panthers will look to use home trail advantage for a potential team upset with a tough Clovis Crush men's team running extremely close together over 4 miles. The men's 4 mile race will start at 11:15am.
