was one for the books. I am still processing all the gems and the connections. The organizers were so intentional with the start and finish. kick started the work with a talk about the attitude gap and it got me thinking about my thinking. We talked about achievement gaps, opportunity gaps, but man, the attitude truly is the determining factor. How I think and feel about my own abilities, my belonging, my trajectory impacts what I see as an opportunity and what I can achieve. 🤯

The sessions were awesome from concrete-representational-abstract to lesson models and my own very biased favorites: bridging the gap across domains and making thinking visible with anchor charts. Although I talk to my teachers about both these ideas, this was my first time presenting these ideas to a crowd. The feedback was filling. I look forward to continuing the conversations and supporting OUR commUNITY in their efforts to provide high quality tier 1 instruction. 🙌🏾

On the last day, lit a fire in the room as he talked about love, people changing the world, and not asking for permission. His talk had me looking like I was cutting onions. He was real and he had receipts. I can’t wait to read his book. 🔥

And as if it couldn’t get any better, I had the opportunity to give a Mini-Note on how every move is a message. My first time doing anything like this and it felt magical. Thank you for creating space for collaboration, clarity, and community. I canNOT wait to join the HIVE in Vegas in ‘26!!!

May the new school year bring you all joy! Remember, you are not alone and everything doesn’t have to be tackled all at once. One commitment, consistent moves, one powerful message! ❤️

I saw a question online this morning about how to teach students to solve equations and I immediately thought about manipulatives. I went rumbling through my supply boxes and pulled out these bad boys. If it were me, I’d start with the concrete or representational first. Representational could be tape or hanger diagrams. I love them both. After lots of practice, I’d pair the concrete and/or representational with the abstract equations so students can see the connections. I’d talk about the group containing the triangle and the cubes representing a sum and how we’d have to subtract to isolate the triangle. That would allow me to introduce inverse operations. Kids need lots of experiences so they can make sense of the concept. Telling them what to do and expecting them to just remember it won’t always work. Do your think aloud (this video is an example of that) because that’s a scaffold, then have them practice while thinking aloud so you can hear (while you see) their thinking.

I didn’t know much when I started teaching, only that I wanted to teach. There was so much I didn’t know that first year, and I still don’t know everything I want to know. One thing for sure though, no matter the role I’m in, I’ll always be a student and that’s what makes me a great educator.

These drawings aren’t the best but the dialogue and aha moments we had definitely we’re ALL THAT! My favorite part about coaching math in the middle is the content. The impact I make this calendar year will be a result of the connections I help others see. I can dig it.

Do you ever look at something so long that it starts to lose its meaning? Or perhaps you've been so tunnel-visioned that you miss the bigger picture? That was me with 'teaching and learning' math. I've always seen it one way, but recently, a lightbulb went off.

While reflecting on 2024, I stumbled upon a fresh perspective that has completely flipped my understanding. Instead of seeing teaching and learning math as 'build it and they will come', I've shifted to 'bridge it, and they will understand', and this transformation is game-changing.

💡 Unlock Prior Knowledge
💡 Strengthen Retention
💡 Foster Problem Solving

I’m excited about the potential this new understanding opens up. It’s a reminder that in teaching and learning math, just like life, evolution and growth are paramount. We should never stop questioning, learning, and pivoting.

If you're feeling stagnant in how you support math learnings, maybe it’s time to challenge your perspectives. Who knows? A small transformation in your viewpoint could lead to monumental changes in your results."

📩 DM me the word "transform" if you're curious about going deeper into "bridge it, and they will understand" and how it could reshape your math instruction.

One of the highlights of the One Lit Math Workshop was the Count It Up™️ breakout session. The kids were working hard to create expressions that were equivalent to the target number.

I enjoyed watching them so much that I decided to create a challenge centered on the game.

How does the 12 Days of -Mas challenge work? ✨

🎯 Each day, you’ll get a target number.

🧮 Use the Count It Up cards to hit the target with any combination of operations (follow order of operations!).

🖊 Share your equation to inspire others using the tag.

First-timers, we’ve got tips to help you organize your thinking.

I could have gone a step further and boxed the quantity I needed to answer the question. That would have made my final steps super clear, but I didn’t feel like re-recording. 🥴

I pulled this routine from the “routines for reasoning” text that my district recently introduced. Many may think this takes too long. I’d follow up that statement with, “how long should it take to reason through a problem?” Honestly, I organize most of this information mentally but that’s because I’ve had tons of practice. Our students aren’t getting as many learning opportunities and that’s why it’s important to make the ones they do get meaningful.

I’ll be posting more about this routine and others on my quest to for all. Together, we will !
