Salem Oregon has a HUGE resource for recreation running right through our city - the Willamette River. However, access to the river for non power craft such as rowing crews, kayaking and paddle teams is poor at best. We have two large docks, but neither is suitable for this kind of recreation. The docks are designed for power boats and boat ramps have poor access for non power craft, if any. At th

e same time, the Riverfront Park area is excellent for rowing and paddling. In the winter months, nearly a mile of flat water opens up in the slough south of the park. In the summer months, as the river level drops, the main channel is perfect for rowing and paddling. Dry Socks for Salem is an attempt to call attention to the resource we have and to offer ideas on how to build a dock and boathouse that is suitable for non power craft water sports. Many cities in Oregon have suitable docks for rowing and paddling. In Portalnd, there are many, in particular, the dock on the east side of the river near OMSI, and docks at Lake Oswego are examples. Corvallis has an excellent dock used by OSU Crew, and at Dexter Lake, near Eugene and in Ashland there are excellent facilities to support community rowing and paddling teams.

There has been renewed discussion about a large low profile dock in Riverfront Park in Salem. A couple weeks ago the Angry Unicorns paddle team had a guest, Salem City Councilor Vanessa Nordike and we talked to her about the idea. Stay tuned for more info and be safe out on the water this summer!

Dragon boat teams like Angry Unicorns are talking about a new large low profile dock. Let's get that on the City of Salem's radar.

The dock is in at North Turner Lake. OK for launching a single kayak, great place to learn. But, why have a boatbramp if you can't back your car down it? Is Turner worried people will bring trailers with power boats? The lake is non power craft only. Also the dock is way too high for launching rowing shells and small boats. There are posts sticking up over the top, not needed, no current. It would be nice if it was longer. Let's thank Turner parks for the facilities and suggest they add ballast (water) to the dock floats and get it lowered to about 8" off the water. Also great to see Woodward Surf Company out there!

Pics from Memorial Day Row 2020 at North Turner Lake. They still don't have the new dock in, and the parking lot isn't open yet. But I had a great row. Oh, and I'm pretty sure I broke the 5 mph speed limit.

Tuner, OR has a new place we could row, North Turner Lake. It's about 800 meters end to end. Landscaping and a dock are going in now. City parks people please, please, make sure that dock you're putting in is low profile!

Several people have chimned in on concepts for location of a low profile dock. As a basic concept, do you prefer the East side at Riverfront Park (new dock connected to existing dock) or on the west side at Wallace Marine Park? If on West Side, concept is put temporary low profile dock under bridges between boat ramp and old boat ramp. Remove from river in high water. Store boats under bridge in secure fenced area. Thoughts?

Dock meeting today. Focus on two options, expand existing dock by sternwheeler to accommodate covered area and much larger dock. Also, option for west side under bridges to put gated area to store trailers and boats and put in a dock over there. Thanks to Kathleen at Salem Multi Cultural Institute for the meeting room. Stay tuned for more concepts.
