Got word this morning that friend and Viking supporter, Cliff Munson, passed away. Cliff was a loyal, hardworking man who helped us establish North Salem JBO. Our hearts go out to Jackie, Taylor, Jon, the Munson family and all of Cliff’s friends.
Cliff wrote a great story with his life and will be missed. Rest easy Cliff.

There will be a Celebration of Life at 5:30 on June 24th at the North Salem High football Stadium.

Carl Shinkle February 23rd, 1946 – June 8th, 2021
Carl Russell Shinkle was born in Hood River, Oregon. Carl grew up and went to high school in Hood River for three years. His family moved to The Dalles where he finished his senior year. His collage career began and ended at Western Oregon University, which was then O.C.E. He focused his studies in the area of literature, and becoming a teacher of high school English was a goal he easily achieved.
Carl began his teaching career at North Salem High School. He was an amazing teacher. His students enjoyed him and they knew how much he cared for them. Many connected with him even after his retirement in 1998 to let him know how much he had affected their lives. He taught everything from Senior Specials his first year to Advanced Placement, College Writing, Film as Lit., sophomore English, etc. Through all 30 years of his teaching, he was a loyal Viking and that strong connection never left him.
He was inducted into the North Salem Hall of Fame in the area of service with regard to his teaching and sports. He coached girls basketball, timed football games in all kinds of weather, announced basketball games and was especially passionate about announcing baseball games. He was the PA for baseball since 2000. He didn’t just announce games but also printed a roster a d a feature story for every home game. Carl traveled to asway games and kept score meticulously so that he was often know as our “official book.” The only games he missed occurred during a spring training trip to Florida to catch up on his Detroit Tigers. He was know by umpires, fans, opponents et al as part of the fabric of North Salem Baseball. He won the Merit Award from the Oregon High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Carl was also a fan of Oregon State Women’s basketball. He had season tickets and enjoyed following their pursuits after graduation and on into the WNBA.
Carl loved being the driver who could take his friends on “Sallies” as they were called. Sallying forth was such fun. He especially loved the mountains and the photos from those sallies are amazing. The beauty of the Pacific Northwest delighted him and he spread his love for it to others. He lover the Gorge and Hood River where he could revive old memories with his brother Dale.
Carl loved to tease and be teased and was the master of sarcasm. His family and friends will remember him for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor and so much more.
He will be sorely missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Darrell Shinkle and Zelda Spencer-Shinkle. Survivors include his brother Dale Shinkle, sister-in-law Sarah Shinkle, nephew Alan Shinkle (Heidi)and nieces Marcella Brooks and Meredith Shinkle.
There will be a Celebration of Life at 5:30 on June 24th at the North Salem High football Stadium. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to North Salem High School’s baseball program.

Please share this post so others may attend Carl's Celebration of Life.

Carl R. Carl R. Shinkle update 6/6/2021: Carl has been moved to Divine Oasis Adult Foster Care Home in south Salem. I’m sorry but Carl isn’t up for visitors just yet.
Carl still has a long way to go and he is under hospice care. The goal is still to try and get him on his feet and mobile. There will be a lot of work but he is in a better place, especially the food but very clean too, and is trying to get better.
I’ll post more when I know more. Positive thoughts still greatly appreciated.

Carl R. Shinkle Update 6/4/2021: Sorry it has been so long since my last update.
I visited Carl last night. He has been moved to a new room. He is off his feeding tube and eating real food. He is also looking to move to a facility when he can get released, maybe next week, but progress is slow. He still is unable to stand or walk and that is the biggest obstacle now. Carl had visitors all day as Joanne Evans and his nephew had been in to see him. Joanne has been remarkable during this entire time. It has been almost a month since she took him to urgent care and she has been visiting daily. This meant he was tired and slept some during our visit. Lets hope he can gather strength and improve his mobility.
I'll post more when I know more.

Carl update 5/31: visited Carl on Saturday. He is progressing but slowly. It looks like one more week, at least, until he can transfer to a rehabilitation facility. He needs to be able to walk but is too weak yet. He needs to eat more to gain strength for this mobility but can’t muster much of an appetite for cream of wheat and hospital chow.
He slept the last part of our visit. Hope he eats and gets his rest.
I’ll post more when I know more.

Carl R. Shinkle update 5/23: I got to visit Carl today. It was a good visit. Dr. came by and explained what has been causing Carl’s issues.
Carl was having A-fib causing his heart to not fill with enough blood. This caused his brain to not get enough blood, but also his heart’s blood vessels. This led to poor health, poor kidney function (needs a lot of blood), and poor digestion.
Carl had an angioplasty and a resetting of his pace maker. This has led to a slow recovery- it is now 21 days of hospitalization. He was eating clear foods yesterday and will be eased into regular food and taken off his feeding tube this week. The doctor said he has a chance to move to a rehabilitation facility by early next week.
Thank you to all who have replied and commented on these updates. I read them to Carl today and he was enjoying recalling his relationship with all who have.
Carl is not out of the woods yet so keep the positive vibes coming. He means a lot to a great many people and it shows in your response.
I’ll post more when I know more.

Carl R. Shinkle update 5/21: More of the same. Carl says he is about how he has been. It was a short conversation because his one daily visitor, longtime friend, Joanne Evans, came to visit. I ducked out.
Please keep the messages coming. Carl hasn't been able to get on FB lately but I read messages to him this week and he was sharp on who each respondent was. It means a lot to him so keep them coming.
I'll post more when I know more.
Lovin'You!
